Partners in performance and innovation

Shell, as technical partner, has supported Hyundai Motorsport’s lubricant needs since they joined the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) in 2014 — bringing high-performance innovation to one of motorsport’s most demanding arenas. The partnership continues to evolve and push boundaries. Shell and Genesis Magma Racing, backed by Hyundai Motor Company, have united in the thrilling arena of endurance racing.

Our partnership with Hyundai

Shell and Hyundai have been partners since 2005, when a global cooperation agreement laid the foundation for deeper collaboration to bring innovative products and after service to Hyundai customers globally. That ambition became reality in 2014, when Shell became Technical Partner to Hyundai Motorsport in WRC, co-engineering advanced lubricants to help drive championship-winning performance — including back-to-back Manufacturer titles in 2019 and 2020, and Thierry Neuville’s 2024 Driver’s Championship victory.

In 2026, the partnership extended into the globally-renowned FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) – bringing shared success, trust and continuity to the sport’s newest team: Genesis Magma Racing. With races lasting six, eight or more hours, developing a dedicated formulation of engine oil for the GMR-001 Hypercar’s powerful V8 engine was a critical part of preparing for the team’s debut.

WEC: A new journey to hyperspeed

As Genesis Magma Racing’s official WEC Performance and Innovation partner, Shell was involved from the very beginning, designing and extensively testing a specialised 0W-40 lubricant. The engine oil combines Shell’s PurePlus technology with bespoke components to achieve maximum performance, thermal stability and component protection over extreme distances. The GMR-001 Hypercar will compete in the WEC’s top-tier category, which includes the iconic 24-hours of Le Mans – widely considered one of the world’s toughest races.

WRC: Relentless performance, total reliability

For more than a decade, Shell Helix Ultra with PurePlus Technology has been pushed to the limit in the WRC. With rallies taking place across extreme environments — from sub-zero temperatures in Sweden to the blistering heat of Kenya — Shell’s race lubricants are designed to maintain engine cleanliness, reduce wear, and protect under the toughest conditions.

Thanks to this relentless performance, Hyundai Motorsport has enjoyed total engine reliability since entering the WRC with Shell. Shell’s specialists will continue to deliver advanced solutions — from gear oils and greases to hydraulic fluids and engine oils — all tailored to meet the technical and durability demands of world-class rallying.

Innovation benefits all Hyundai drivers

Shell’s work in WRC and WEC is more than competition — it plays a critical role in its track-to-road development strategy, providing a testbed to test, refine and accelerate technologies for the road. Shell’s scientists learn alongside Hyundai Motorsport is channelled back into products like Shell Helix Ultra, helping everyday drivers benefit from cutting-edge performance and protection, wherever they drive.
