Title: Shell Decarbonising Motorsports: 10% Biofuel for Scuderia Ferrari
Duration: 05:05
Description: As Innovation Partner, Shell is supplying Scuderia Ferrari with a 10% Biofuel for the 2022 F1 Season. This new race fuel, which Shell sources from its partner Raizen, contains up 10% of 2nd generation bioethanol and is made from sugarcane waste.

Paulo Côrte-Real Neves
Vice President of Trading at Raizen
Paulo in vision:
My name is Paulo Côrte-Real Neves. I'm VP of Trading for Raizen. We're the largest sugar cane producer in the world.
Cuts to shots of sugar cane fields and factory process.
Paulo voice-over:
Sugar cane is the most efficient way of converting solar energy into biomass, and from biomass to transportation energy.
[Text displays]
Biomass
Paulo voice-over:
We produce the sugar cane and we crush it into a juice that is converted in sugar and first generation ethanol.
Cuts to shots of Ferrari F1 car.
Paulo voice-over:
We convert these sugars and these biomass into second generation ethanol. The second generation ethanol is a way of producing 40 to 50% additional product from the same land, from the same origin.
Cuts to diagram demonstrating the difference between standard fuel and biofuel.
Text:
Standard fuel: 0.3gal produced per gallon of crude oil
Biofuel: 40-50% increase in fuel production
Paulo in vision:
A great product that reduces more than 80% of the emissions if compared with other fuels.
[Text displays]
Reduces almost 80% emissions vs gasoline
Paulo in vision:
This fuel is going to be stressed and test at the highest possible levels of challenges, and this test is in Formula 1.

Valeria voice-over:
It dates back to the '50s, so it is over 70 years that we've been working together. In 2022, we are introducing for the first time an E10 fuel, and 10% of it comes from sustainable fuels.

Valeria voice-over:
Ethanol is a very well known burning component and has very good combustion properties.

High Octane
[Video footage]
Cuts to Valeria working in the lab, analysing the fuel and F1 livery.
Valeria voice-over:
… has a really high octane number, has a very good flame speed, which is really important, for example, in Formula 1, because you have high revolution engines. Having the opportunity to work on race fuels is like using a very fast responding natural lab.
[Text displays]
Fast responding natural lab
Valeria voice-over:
That is really the driver for us to keep investing in motorsport and keeping this research programmes because we can really learn important features that we can then transport into road fuels.

Laurent Mekies
Racing Director at Scuderia Ferrari
Lauren in vision:
My name is Laurent Mekies. I'm Scuderia Ferrari Racing Director. The relationship between Shell and Scuderia Ferrari has been a very special one.
Cuts to shots of Ferrari team.
Laurent voice-over:
It's one that led us to many world championships and many great memories, but it's also one that is centred around innovations, and we are always looking forward to what's coming next.

Innovations
[Video footage]
Cuts to further footage of Ferrari F1 car, plus shots of a city skyline.
Laurent voice-over:
And it's in that spirit that we embark together in the 2022 season. You know, it’s something that Ferrari, it's partners, have pushed very hard for. You know, we want Formula 1 to remain. It's fundamental that we are able to, thanks to the regulations, to bring true innovations to the racing world, which can eventually be one day cascaded to people and to society. So there is already a roadmap to bring 100% sustainable fuel into Formula 1.

Sustainability
Valeria voice-over:
Sustainability is just one aspect of racing fuel. We also need to keep it performing, very fast burning. And by looking at more sustainable fuels for racing, we have an opportunity, a unique opportunity, to find new features and elements that we can then transfer to our road products.

Living the dream
Valeria voice-over:
It is like a kind of a living the dream in being in this job and being able to interact with our partners so closely.
Laurent voice-over:
It’s a season in which we are going with ambitions to fight, and hopefully to fight for wins. Shell and Ferrari are companies that always look forward, and we simply look at what is coming tomorrow. We want to shape this tomorrow with innovations.
[Text displays]
Shape tomorrow
Laurent voice-over:
That's what drives both our companies.
