Social investment
Social investment is our focused contribution to communities in countries where we work. Our social investment programmes help tackle important social issues, strengthen relationships with our local communities and build trust in Shell.
Shell aims to be a good neighbour by contributing to local communities where we work. Beyond the energy we provide, the jobs we create and the taxes we pay, Shell contributes to hundreds of social investment programmes in more than 45 countries across the world.
Through our social investment, we seek to enable economic opportunities for communities through skills development, focusing on three areas: skills for STEM, enterprise development, and resource-based livelihoods.
Our three focus areas
Skills for STEM
Skills for STEM includes technical, analytical and problem-solving capabilities that enable individuals to work in industrial and technology sectors. Beyond the STEM subjects, it is an approach that empowers individuals to use cross-disciplinary skills to address real world problems and participate in the modern workplace.
Shell NXplorers is our global programme that supports skill development by inspiring young people to think differently and design sustainable solutions to real-world challenges. It introduces NXthinking, a structured way of thinking that blends systems thinking, scenario planning, and theory of change to help learners navigate complexity and drive meaningful impact.

Skills for enterprise development
Skills for enterprise development empower entrepreneurs with the capabilities they need to start, grow and sustain successful businesses. By strengthening key entrepreneurial, managerial and technical skills, we help micro, small and medium enterprises seize opportunities, adapt to changing markets, drive local economic growth and job creation.
Shell LiveWire—our global enterprise development programme—equips entrepreneurs around the world with the skills, confidence and networks they need to build thriving businesses and create lasting community impact through innovative solutions and meaningful employment.
Skills for resource-based livelihoods
Resource based livelihoods are ways in which individuals, households, or communities generate income through sustainable use of natural resources available in their environment.
Our social investment programmes support agriculture and fishing communities across the world by building capabilities that enable communities to sustainably use natural resources for income generation, food security, and resilience. These programmes are usually implemented in rural, coastal, and agricultural settings, typically in and near our areas of operation.
