What was your journey like before Shell?

I graduated with a degree in computer science in 2003, and subsequently earned a postgraduate diploma in business administration. After working at various technology multinationals in India, I joined Shell as a data modeler in 2017. After joining Shell, I found myself with the time to pursue an MTech degree in data analytics, which has served me well in my career since.

The thing about other companies is that, while employed there, I spent a significant amount of time working with their client companies. It’s why I understood that, even if a company doesn’t have a core IT business, the field still plays a major role in its day-to-day operations. When I had the opportunity to work at a major brand like Shell, I jumped at the chance. I’m truly hoping this is the last stop.

I’m responsible for ensuring that the design architecture and pipelines for B2B data platforms we develop are well managed. This gives me a unique end-to-end picture of how data is being captured, translated, and loaded, and then turned into insights that help Shell’s businesses.

What’s most exciting about your current role at the company?

I’m currently a principal data engineer, which means I’m a technical lead and a subject matter expert. I am involved in the end-to-end journey for data analytics projects or platforms. I’m responsible for ensuring that the design architecture and pipelines for B2B data platforms we develop are well managed. This gives me a unique end-to-end picture of how data is being captured, translated, and loaded, and then turned into insights that help Shell’s businesses. Bringing that value to the company brings me a personal sense of pride. More recently, I was also selected to represent Shell at the Smart India Hackathon as both a jury member and a mentor. I couldn’t be prouder to say that I was also amongst the chosen few who travelled to Mumbai, India to join the Gartner Data & Analytics 2022 summit.

Staying motivated the way I do is easy for two reasons. For one, the benefits are incredible. Second, both my line manager and Shell as a whole always seem to have my best interest at heart. Not only does the company insist on a healthy work-life balance, but I also feel like I truly have a voice, and that my achievements are recognised. I am not expected to entertain work calls after 6:30 pm and when I need to be there for my family, my colleagues and superiors are incredibly supportive.

What has working at Shell been like?

Well, for one, I’m much more available now. My daughter was three and a half when I joined Shell, and she’s eight years old now. Unlike a few years ago, I have the time to do simple things like helping her with her homework. I’m sure my wife appreciates it too.

Our team leverages data to track everything from emission levels to renewable energy. Even if we’re not working on upstream projects like building a hydrogen plant, our job powers the data for it, which is key. That’s why I believe data analytics has a bright future.

What does Powering Progress mean to you?

All of us need to contribute in every way we can to work towards net-zero goals so the generations after us have a planet they can comfortably live in. In our information and data analytics team, we’re constantly working on projects with companies in our ecosystem that involve sustainability aims. Our team uses data to track emission levels and renewable energy. Even when we’re not working on plans like building a hydrogen plant, our job powers the data for it, which is key. It’s why I believe data analytics has a bright future here at Shell.

What does an employee need to thrive in Information, Data and Analytics?

Of course, it’s a given that you need to have a technical bent of mind. More importantly, though, I look for people who are willing to learn and contribute as a team. They need to be able to own their tasks and deliver them end-to-end. I don’t like to be micromanaged and I dislike doing the same to my team members. Instead, I trust their commitment and capabilities to get the job done.
