Shell EcoSafe S3 DU for Paper Manufacturers
Fire-resistant fluids designed to reduce ignition risk and support reliable performance in high-temperature paper mill environments.
What is a fire-resistant fluid for paper mill operations?
Shell EcoSafe S3 DU is a polyalkylene glycol (PAG)-based hydraulic and gear fluid designed for paper mills operating in high-temperature, high-risk environments. It helps reduce ignition risk while providing long oil life, stable performance and consistent lubrication for hydraulic and gear systems under continuous load.
Why are fire-resistant fluids important in paper mill environments?
Paper production combines high temperatures, flammable materials and pressurised fluids. When mineral oil-based fluids leak or atomise onto hot surfaces, the risk of ignition increases significantly – creating the potential for fires that can disrupt operations and damage critical equipment.
Fire-resistant fluids are designed to reduce the likelihood of ignition during leaks or spills while performing reliably in demanding conditions. As part of a layered fire-risk strategy, they help strengthen protection and limit fire intensity in areas where potential ignition sources cannot be fully eliminated.

What is PAG technology?
Polyalkylene glycol (PAG) fluids are synthetic lubricants that combine inherent fire resistance with stable lubrication performance in high-temperature paper mill environments.
Strong oxidation resistance helps extend fluid life and reduce the formation of acids and deposits that can affect system performance. Good air release and low foaming behaviour helps maintain system responsiveness and reduce the risk of cavitation and wear. PAG fluids also maintain consistent viscosity across a wide temperature range.
In continuous paper production, where hydraulic and gear systems operate under constant load, these properties help support reliable operation, longer service intervals and more consistent performance.
Benefits of Shell EcoSafe S3 DU
Excellent fire resistance
High flash and fire points help reduce ignition risk1, while lower heat of combustion helps limit fire intensity if ignition occurs.2
Reliable wear protection
Strong load-carrying performance helps protect components in demanding hydraulic and gear applications.
Enhanced oil life
Up to 6,000 hours TOST life3 and more than 600-minute RPVOT4 support longer oil drain intervals and reduced maintenance requirements.
Efficient system operation
Good air release and low foaming help maintain stable system response, reducing cavitation risk and supporting consistent operation.5

Performance advantages
Good thermal conductivity supports system stability under continuous load, while very good air release and anti-foam characteristics keep hydraulic and gear systems running smoothly.5

Safety advantages
Lower heat of combustion (up to 35% vs mineral oils) reduces energy released during fire events, limiting fire intensity and reducing potential impact on equipment, production areas and surrounding infrastructure.2

Service life advantages
High oxidation3 and hydrolytic stability6 help extend fluid life, even in water-contaminated environments. This supports fewer oil changes, reduced downtime and lower maintenance effort.
