Shell has been a pioneer in liquefied natural gas (LNG) for more than 50 years. We have continued to innovate and improve the technology behind LNG, from early Propane/Mixed Refrigerant (C3/MR) developments to today’s large-scale Dual Mixed Refrigerant (DMR) and Floating LNG solutions. Our latest innovation is Shell’s Midscale Modular LNG Solution (MML) – a pre-engineered, ready to deploy design which packages the liquefaction and gas processing technologies into modules alongside vendor assembled compressor and CWHE modules.

Shell Catalysts & Technologies, backed by Shell’s vast experience as an LNG project developer, technology licensor, and operator, can support customers  in maximising the value of gas resources and lowering the cost of bringing the opportunities to the global LNG market.

Shell has a world-leading Integrated Gas and LNG business[EP], operating LNG plants that utilise a broad range of liquefaction technologies from both Shell and third-party providers. The Shell liquefaction technology portfolio includes the Shell Propane pre-cooled/Mixed Refrigerant process and the Shell Dual Mixed Refrigerant process. Both technologies are available for stick-built LNG developments while DMR is also offered as a modularized solution.

These technologies can be licensed as standalone liquefaction systems or as part of an integrated LNG train coupled with Shell gas processing technology, bringing benefits in terms of CapEX, efficiency and operability.

Shell technologies are suitable for a wide range of onshore and offshore opportunities and for climatic conditions ranging from hot and temperate locations to subarctic environments.

Canada LNG[1]

LNG Canada, a large-scale onshore LNG facility in Kitimat, British Columbia, uses DMR technology. The facility consists of two LNG processing trains with a total capacity of 14 mtpa, supplying LNG primarily to customers in Asia. The project achieved a key milestone with the departure of its first LNG cargo in June 2025.

Prelude FLNG[2]

Prelude, Shell’s first operating FLNG facility, applies Shell DMR technology to produce LNG offshore in Western Australia. Commissioned in 2018, it demonstrated the commercial deployment of DMR technology in a large-scale floating LNG application.
