As part of Shell’s commitment to fairness and transparency in the recruitment process, we want to provide guidance on how artificial intelligence (AI) can and cannot be used when preparing your application.
AI tools can be helpful for refining ideas and improving clarity, but it’s essential that your application remains an authentic representation of your skills, experiences and personality. The following guidelines outline acceptable and unacceptable uses of AI to ensure integrity and equal opportunity throughout the hiring process.
Acceptable use of AI
The acceptable uses of AI described below apply to preparation activities outside of formal assessments and live interviews.
- Application Support: AI can help organise and refine your CV, resume or application, ensuring clarity and relevance, while the content must remain authentic and represent your own experience.
- Interview Preparation: AI may be used to practice responses, structure answers (e.g., STAR method), and research common questions—provided all information is accurate and truthful.
- Accessibility Assistance: AI can assist with adjustments that make the process fair and accessible for everyone.
Unacceptable use of AI
AI must not be used to fabricate, falsify, or misrepresent any information. Your application should reflect your genuine qualifications and experience.
- Assisting in completing online assessments: Online assessments at Shell are designed to help us understand candidates’ skills, behaviours and capabilities. Using AI during these assessments would not reflect your own capabilities and is therefore not permitted
- Providing answers to, or supporting in answering, interview questions: We are genuinely interested in learning about you — your unique experiences, perspectives, and what you can bring to the team. We value authentic, real-time answers to the interview stage of the assessment process. AI should not be used during interviews to generate responses to questions as this would not provide an authentic representation of your own capabilities
Shell does not endorse or recommend specific AI tools; this guidance focuses on responsible use of AI during the recruitment process.
