Thinking Big

I’ve always been fascinated by large scale-projects and thinking big. Even back at school, there was something that drew me to the larger scientific challenges. As an undergraduate I became interested in supercomputing and realised it was the area I wanted to work in.

I started my career as part of a team that was building what became the fourth fastest supercomputer in the world. I knew then that I really wanted to work using supercomputers to solve problems.

Building a Better Future

I joined the Shell Business Operations Bangalore office in 2017, which was the perfect time. Shell is venturing into new energies—energies that will transform the future. That’s an incredibly exciting prospect for me. Technologies are converging, I can use my knowledge and skills to connect up research ideas and IT solutions using supercomputers.

My role involves designing and running supercomputers for Shell’s seismic analysis of geophysics exploration datasets, which enables the research and exploration teams make business-critical predictions and decisions. My work puts me at the heart of Shell and I feel like I am genuinely making a difference in our journey to a low-carbon future.

Shell is helping me build my own future too. Right from my very first interviews with my manager, I had a very clear idea of my career progression. I was offered a number of training courses to take myself to the next level.

With Shell you get that global presence, with the chance to connect with cultures around the world—literally. Since joining in 2017 I have travelled to see the Shell supercomputers in both Houston and Amsterdam. These computers are some of the very best in the world, and Shell gives me access to all they can do to shape the future.

My team and I are at the cutting edge of research, working on one of the fastest supercomputers in the world that you wouldn’t be able to use anywhere else. We’re ahead of the curve and these are more powerful than anything I have ever worked on before.

Embracing Opportunity

I regularly talk to students about careers at Shell and I always tell them I believe these are the best opportunities that any university graduate, or more experienced professional for that matter, will find.

Shell is committed to a sustainable energy future, and you have the potential to do what is in your head and your heart—as well as experiment, which gets back to why I loved science in the first place. If you have a compelling idea for a start-up, then Shell will help to make it happen. Meaning you get the best of both worlds. It’s an ideal place for big thinkers.

A few years ago, one of my old school teachers got in touch with me and asked me what I’m doing now. When I told him I was working in supercomputers, he remembered my work in the school laboratories and said “I used to tell you some day that you’d be working on something like that.” I’ve always had this passion and Shell has given me the opportunity to live it every day.
