Breaking Barriers: Ravi’s Story at Shell

At Shell, we believe ability matters more than assumptions. Ravi’s journey shows how an accessible and inclusive workplace unlocks potential.

Diagnosed with muscular dystrophy in 2010, Ravi gradually lost mobility. But he refused to let that define his potential. He wanted challenging work where he could learn and grow—and sought an employer that truly values ability over assumptions.

At Shell, Ravi found that environment. Starting as a Commercial Analyst, he was initially hesitant to disclose his disability because of his past experiences. But when his manager focused on his skills and offered support, Ravi thrived. “That’s when I realised that at Shell, we don’t just talk—we walk the talk,” he says.

Inclusive Leadership and Accessibility in Action

Ben, Ravi’s line manager and Global Project Lead in Houston, believes inclusive leadership is about opening doors, not setting limits. When Ravi needed to travel for face-to-face engagements, Ben and the team focused on enabling possibilities - from accessible meeting spaces to inclusive team-building activities, so Ravi could concentrate on delivering value, not navigating barriers.

“Accessibility is a shared responsibility,” Ben says. “Whenever someone with a disability encounters limitations, it’s not just a disservice to them—it’s a missed opportunity for our business.”

This commitment is reinforced by Shell’s Workplace Accessibility Program, which worked with different teams to make Ravi’s workspace more accessible. From ergonomic setups to assistive technology and accessible physical and digital environments, the program addresses diverse needs, including those of people with physical, sensory, cognitive, and other conditions. Travel can be stressful, but Shell’s Travel Accessibility Desk manages Ravi’s accessibility requirements - allowing him to focus on his job.

Driving Change Beyond the Role

Today, Ravi is a Projects Commercial Excellence Lead in Bangalore, ensuring engineering projects deliver commercial advantage for Shell Trading & Supply. HisRavi’s work has helped strengthen Shell’s competitive position through innovative benchmarking initiatives. Beyond his role, Ravi actively leads initiatives in Shell’s enABLE network, advocating for colleagues with disabilities and fostering an inclusive workplace through promoting awareness and allyship across Shell.

“When you set limits for yourself or others, you lose potential,” says Ravi. “True allyship starts with asking: What does enablement and accessibility mean for this person?”

As we mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, Ravi shares one of the many ways Shell is working to create a more inclusive environment. Care, courage and curiosity guide how we remove barriers and enable people to thrive - with workplace adjustments, allies, and opportunities.
