Embarking on the Commercial Business area of the Shell Graduate Programme, you'll join a three-year competence-based training programme where you'll experience working in two roles, each lasting 18 months. Interview with Sudeshna Dutt
“My name is Sudeshna and I’m currently working as a supply planner for bitumen.”

“There are instances where a lot of people may think, would such responsibilities be given to a young graduate? In Shell I like to think that you do actually get your hands on projects and tasks. It’s all about just taking that challenge that has been presented to you and turning it into an opportunity to prove yourself.”

“Being in a supply planner role, there’s actually quite a lot of teamwork involved. Developing the solutions with your colleagues makes the job more exciting.”

“There are a lot of opportunities where you get to meet senior leaders in Shell to understand how their career expand in the company. Having such conversations with these people truly inspires me.”

“I think the Shell graduate programme addresses that uncertainty that a graduate may have about his career prospects. The programme is structured in such a way that it doesn’t allow the graduate to feel confused. There are a lot of advice in place to develop your interests and then match that against the company’s.”

“There is the individual development plan that’s developed between yourself as well as your line manager that identifies the areas of strengths that you may have, and more importantly tackle or address solutions in developing the areas that you need to improve on.”

“The Shell graduate programme also gives you the opportunity to get a mentor, somebody senior working in Shell so you could also tap on expertise to understand more about the industry and how you could develop your career in this company.”

“One great thing that Shell actually has is this Shell development learning fund. Anyone in Shell can actually use it to take on any particular course that they may feel like and it’s fully sponsored by the company.”

“Having a flexible work environment then enables you to have a work life balance, after work to go out and do the things that I like. Shell has got a lot of clubs and organisations that you can be part of. Taking part in these activities does enable you to connect with the other graduates. I think being a graduate hire of Shell makes me feel proud and honoured that a global organisation identifies you as a potential leader, to lead the company one day in managing the energy challenge and developing solutions to tackle it.”

Roles and responsibilities
As a graduate in the Downstream Supply Chain you'll be able to develop your commercial skills through exposure to a variety of roles within the Downstream business, which may include:
- Distribution Business Analyst
- Logistics Analyst
- Materials Planner
- Optimisation Analyst
- Production Planner
- Supply Analyst
You can expect to take up a range of responsibilities including:
- Planning of supply chain strategies
- Identifying supply chain improvement opportunities
- Optimising operations, including distribution channels
- Negotiating contracts to maximise value
- Monitoring business management risks
Training and development
You'll receive training in areas including supply chain, refinery economics, price risk management in the oil market and integrated supply chain management. To supplement your practical training you will be enrolled onto formal learning courses specific to your area of expertise. These might include Negotiations, Supply Chain Economics or Leadership. Throughout the Shell Graduate Programme you'll receive regular progress checks that will help us work with you to determine the direction of your career progression and development plan.
