The Shell Graduate Programme
Embarking on a career in the Corporate Functions area of the Shell Graduate Programme, you’ll help deliver the specialist advice that enables us to operate as a highly competitive global business. The programme lasts for three years and consists of two 18-month job rotations. As a talented problem solver you'll thrive in our multicultural and interconnected team of business professionals, where you'll be given increasing levels of responsibility as you progress.
Contracting and Procurement
Within Shell’s Contracting and Procurement team, you’ll play a pivotal role in providing the essential support needed to deliver cost-effective solutions that impact our businesses positively and form long-term relationships with our partners and suppliers. In particular, this includes contractors committed to social performance and a cleaner global energy.
The Contract and Procurement team is responsible for everything Shell buys to develop and operate its assets, equating to approximately $65 billion in annual spend. It’s a thrilling environment for graduates keen to test and further develop their interpersonal skills and commercial acumen.

When you say Shell, people do know your organization. There are a lot of opportunities in Shell. It is definitely an exciting organization.

As a graduate, they do put you in real-life situations and big projects.

My name’s Caroline. Currently I’m a senior buyer in one of the largest refineries in the world.

This is definitely a very challenging job. I do spend part of the day really making sure that my products are delivered on time and to make sure that the operations is run smoothly. We do not want any hiccups in the refinery.

There is a huge focus on safety. That is something that’s become very real in my job and something that I appreciate more.

Being engaged in these commercial negotiations can be quite exciting.

You get to see how your work impacts the business. It really exposes you to the different portfolios. It just reminds you how big this organization is.

There is always an opportunity to innovate from the current processes that are already established. It’s really a company that’s constantly looking at new ways to innovate and to improve.

It’s a really hard environment to find in the corporate world, it’s very nurturing and you get to meet a lot of people who are willing to guide you. No matter how senior a leader is in Shell, I have never found it difficult to approach them, not just from your immediate line managers, but as well as the mentor that is assigned to you as well.

They do take a very proactive role in engaging you and what you hope to achieve. That definitely does develop you as an individual as you pick up different skill sets that a leader needs.

There’s always time to pursue your own interests, and I think that Shell definitely respects that personal space.

I was able to actually use self-development Learning Fund to actually learn a new language last year. So that was something that I took outside of Shell, and that was really fun.

There is a lot of diversity, and, you know, there is a lot of young fellow graduates that you can also speak to and to learn from them. The graduates from all over the world come together for lunch-and-learn sessions and to just get to know each other.

I hope to be able to connect with more fellow graduates all around the world.

So you get to meet a lot of interesting personalities, people who are very different and yet similar in wanting to achieve their career ambitions.

I was able to find a close group of friends with similar interests. It brings me to work feeling happier every day just to be able to see them and just to have lunch with them.

There are, in fact, a lot of opportunities to really test and stretch in how far your capacity can actually bring you to.

Roles and responsibilities
You'll have the chance to experience different roles within Contracting and Procurement and you may have the opportunity to work in business areas such as:
- Planning and Performance
- Category Management Analysis
- Contract Management
- Sourcing and Operations
You will take on a range of responsibilities including:
- Analysing supplier/category market intelligence
- Developing cost models
- Contract bidding and negotiating
- Post-award contract management
- Implementing and localising procurement corporate strategies
Roles you could experience include:
- Contract engineer or analyst
- Category and market intelligence analyst
- Procurement manager
Training and development
This is an excellent opportunity for you to discover what you are capable of, to learn and to develop.
