Spotlight: Digitalisation – API’s decoded
Digitalisation plays an integral role in fleet management for businesses of all sizes to ensure safe and efficient operations. Like in many aspects of our day-to-day lives, fleet data-led processes are becoming increasingly automated thanks to system integrations, powered by Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). From decarbonisation to cost reduction APIs allow for enhanced decision making. But how do they work and how can you harness their potential?
In the latest episode of our Spotlight Series, Christoph Stollberg, Head of API, Ecosystems & B2B Digital Channels, Shell examines the role of automation in fleet operations and how fleets can use data-driven solutions to simplify their operations.

To efficiently operate a fleet, companies need access to data functionality and insights no matter what the size nor no matter what the business. In the 21st century, this information is converted into digital formats and then provided for apps, web portals for customers, conveniently available at their fingertips. The same data functionality can be provided by directly integrating system to system.

We increasingly see customers globally, across industry sectors using this system to system integration to automate business processes,

As a result, this previously involved manual work, so human interventions are now fully automated. Ultimately this leads to a reduction in cost which makes the company more profitable and competitive.

Equally, the customised availability of data enables fast and better decision-making. Which is evermore important as we go through the energy transition.

Before, I mentioned, system to system connections are performed by APIs. And APIs stand for Application Programming Interface. They are a messenger between systems to get data from A to B in the most secure way. They have become the factor standard to power digital ecosystems.

I will give you two examples from the real world. One is from the trucking sector. As you can imagine, they want to plan the optimal route to reduce the total cost of operations then that software that does the job for you is greatly informed by the integration fuel price data and station location.

Newer vehicles are fully connected devices on wheels in case an electric vehicle with a battery inside. So that means effectively two things, one, we can produce an enormous amount of data about the device health and about contextual location data, and secondly that a number of services have already started to move into the vehicle,
