Shell has completed a first road trial in India using a new bio-based material, this is a major milestone in the journey towards the reduction of carbon footprint of asphalt pavements and Shell’s target to become a net-zero emissions energy business by 2050. In addition to the carbon footprint benefits, asphalt mixtures with bio-based components can also promote a circular economy, compared to conventional asphalt mixtures. Shell has committed to a research programme focusing on the use of bio-based materials as asphalt components for the industry to reduce the overall carbon footprint of asphalt.

Shell has collaborated with a leading bio-technology company in India to develop this new bio-based material. The first proof of concept trial road section, with this new bio-based material, was laid in Vadodara, India on the 9th of June 2022. Shell, in collaboration with its partners, regulators and policy makers, is planning to conduct further trials later this year in India.

Shell believes the construction industry can achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, but action must be taken now. Decarbonising construction requires using all available measures at each stage of the value chain. It also involves coming together as an industry to develop lower carbon solutions, promote circularity, and work alongside policymakers and regulators to implement supportive policy frameworks. A multitude of solutions will need to be deployed across the value-chain, some of which still to be developed.
