Shell and United E&P to collaborate on sustainable road construction in Singapore
Aug 2, 2021
On 27 July 2021, Shell Singapore and United E&P Pte Ltd (UE&P) have signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding (MOU) to develop a strategic alliance to pursue their common ambition of decarbonisation and sustainable road construction in Singapore. This alliance is the first of its kind for Shell and in Singapore to focus on decarbonisation of the road construction sector.
This strategic alliance builds on the long relationship between Shell and UE&P and together the parties will explore short and medium-term solution pathways for sustainable road construction, such as the supply by Shell of innovative lower-carbon bitumen binders used for road surfacing that extend a road’s lifespan. The companies will also collaborate on a range of solutions and services to reduce the carbon footprint of UE&P’s own operations, as well as from the road construction and pavement lifecycle. These include exploring the viability of generating electricity from waste heat and renewable power (including solar energy); using lower carbon fuels for UE&P’s construction equipment and vehicles; compressed bio gas to power UE&P’s asphalt plant; and nature-based carbon credits.
Elvin Koh, CEO of UE&P said: “As one of the leading asphalt premix producer and integrated asphalt pavement solutions providers to the Singapore road construction sector, UE&P aspires to lead the decarbonisation efforts in the sector, to demonstrate the possible pathways to sustainable road construction and to harness sustainability as a competitive advantage for UE&P going forward. This strategic alliance with Shell is a great example of what is needed to catalyse low-carbon solutions for the construction sector in Singapore.”
Raman Ojha, Vice President, Shell Construction & Road, said: “Shell wants to play a central role in the transition to net zero for the road construction sector. Partnering with our customers to develop and deploy low carbon solutions will help accelerate progress. We are delighted to deepen our relationship with UE&P and help the company to pursue its sustainability ambitions while playing our part to decarbonise road construction in Singapore. Shell has decades of experience finding new and improved paving solutions and this collaboration will help progress our own target to be a net-zero emissions energy business by 2050, in step with society.”
Shell and UE&P have worked together on a number of major road maintenance and runway construction projects in Singapore, including the pavement of Changi Airport Runway 3 and Marina Bay Street Circuit for Singapore Grand Prix, and the maintenance of the Pan Island Expressway.
