Shell Vietnam becomes the first international company to receive a major Vietnamese Ministry of Transportation honour
May 9, 2011
The Vietnam Ministry of Transportation has recognised Shell Vietnam for its contribution to the research and application of new technologies in road building.
The Conference on Transportation Science and Technology is held every 5 years in Vietnam, to review the industry and look to future developments. This event is attended by a wide range of nationwide stakeholders ranging from Government, research centres and institutions to provincial departments of transportation, investors, contractors and suppliers. This year, the event was attended by the Deputy Prime Minister of Vietnam.
This year, Shell became the first ever international company to receive the certificate of honour at this conference - for its contribution to the road pavement sector - traditionally awarded only to local companies.
This presentation followed Shell Vietnam’s work with the Technology Department of Ministry of Transportation and the Institute of Transportation Science and Technology, conducting research and development into bitumen products suitable for use in Vietnam. Shell has supported the development of standards and procedures in various applications for local use by contractors and road authorities.
Speaking at the conference, Yutthaporn Janyajarasporn – the Regional Bitumen Technical Manager - provided an overview of Shell’s technical knowledge and product portfolio and presented a paper on Shell’s global technologies. Amid interest in less environmentally impactful solutions, Shell Vietnam has successfully been focusing on introducing products such as Shell Low Temp Binders and Shell Cariphalte which may have benefits in this arena.
Additionally, many congratulations should go to Phan Viet Dung, Bitumen Sales Manager, who was also handed a certificate of honour for his individual efforts and contribution during his time working with the Ministry of Transportation as a Shell representative. Dung has worked in Shell Bitumen since joining Shell in 1999.
Over the last few years, Shell has worked closely with the Technology Department of Ministry of Transportation and the Institute of Transportation Science and Technology in conducting research and development into products suitable for use in Vietnam. With Shell’s strong support and global expertise, several standards and procedures have been developed and certified for local use - with applications in a range of key projects receiving appreciation from road contractors and road authorities. Examples of the applications include:
- specification for conventional bitumen;
- specification for polymer modified bitumen;
- specification for very thin overlay pavement for skid resistance (for highway);
- specification for polymer modified asphalt for heavy duty application (airport, bridge);
- specification for polymer modified emulsion;
- specification for stone mastic asphalt (SMA);
- review of specification for emulsion; and
- review of specification for asphalt concrete.
Meanwhile, Shell Vietnam Bitumen continues to work on:
- low temp binder & application specifications:
- review & improvements of specification for conventional bitumen;
- review & improvements of specification for polymer modified bitumen;
- maintenance solution proposals (joint with specifier – Institute of Science and Technology); and
- partly join to set up recycling specifications.
Speaking at the conference, Yutthaporn Janyajarasporn - Regional Technical Manager - provided an overview on Shell’s global technical expertise, showcasing Shell’s proven product portfolio and presenting a paper on Shell’s global technology. Shell took this opportunity to address the road authorities’ interested areas in the environmental solutions (lower carbon footprints) such as low temp binders.
In Vietnam, Shell has successfully marketed Shell Cariphalte, a polymer modified bitumen range to provide solutions for all types of roads. This year, Shell has also focused on introducing energy-saving solutions to Vietnam to help local contractors lower their energy consumption and carbon footprint.
Also at the conference, Shell received another honour. One of Shell’s staff, Phan Viet Dung - Bitumen Sales Manager was handed a certificate of honour for his individual efforts and contribution during his time working with the Ministry of Transportation as a Shell representative. Dung has worked in Shell Bitumen since joining Shell in 1999.
