Shell has a bold goal: to become one of the world’s most diverse and inclusive companies, a place where everyone – from our employees to our customers, partners and suppliers – feels valued, respected and has a strong sense of belonging. We’ve set this goal and embedded it in our global company strategy – Powering Progress – because it’s about who we are, it’s the right thing to do, and it will make us a stronger company. It will bring a richness of experience that will help us innovate for the future and better serve our customers, so we all thrive together. Our CEO and Executive Committee are accountable for our progress.

Our goal sounds great, but you may be asking “what does it mean?”.

It means that our inclusion strategy is about absolutely everyone. So whoever you are, and wherever you are, we want you to be free to be yourself at Shell and to contribute positively to our inclusive culture.

It means we recognise that each of us starts from a different place, and levelling the playing field for everyone means taking targeted action – starting with our four global equity focus areas (Gender, Race & Ethnicity, LGBT+ and Disability Inclusion and enABLEment).

It means we publish our roadmap and our guiding principles, which were built from hundreds of conversations with colleagues, so you know where we are today, where we want to go and how we plan to get there. We don’t have all the answers. And we’ll keep talking, listening, learning and improving our approach.

It means being transparent about our data and experiences. Much of it will be positive, some of it will show we’re heading in the right direction and some of it will demand we do more.

It means Shell is a great place to work because we have prioritised inclusion for decades, with an ambition to continuously improve because we know we can do more. In 2022, our Shell People Survey, which measures employee engagement at Shell, showed a result of 82 points out of 100 for all questions relating to DE&I (up two points from 2021). The question ‘I feel like I belong at Shell’ scored 80 (up three points from 2021).

We hope these pages will give you the answers you’re looking for about our commitment, how we hold ourselves accountable, and achieving sustainable progress to making a meaningful difference. A great place to start is the video interview with our CEO and Chief Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer.

Our Gender, Race & Ethnicity, LGBT+ and Disability Inclusion and enABLEment webpages explain the individual ambitions we’ve set, the DE&I programmes and initiatives we run and the progress and impact we’ve made. On each page you will also find a series of short videos from our employees, as they share their stories. And you can also read about our Employee Resource Groups, the role of active allyship and the DE&I awards Shell has won.

Our Four Equity Focus Areas Today

Shell is working towards gender equality in our workforce.

Race & Ethnicity

We are working to address racial inequity and create an inclusive work environment where everyone feels valued.

We are working to advance LGBT+ inclusion within Shell and the communities where we work.

Disability Inclusion and enABLEment

Shell is a place where people with disabilities can excel.

What does “Diversity”, “Equity” & “Inclusion” mean to us?

DIVERSITY is the rich combination of visible and invisible differences that make each of us unique. We value the unique perspectives, experiences, expertise, cultures, and working styles that each employee brings to Shell and aim to represent the diverse communities where we live and work.

Each of us starts from a different place and EQUITY works to address the imbalance so we can achieve fair outcomes for everyone. We aim to ‘level the playing field’ by identifying and removing barriers to opportunity so our employees and the communities in which we live and work can thrive.

INCLUSION is consciously and actively respecting, embracing and valuing the uniqueness of each other as a source of our strength. It is about having the courage to intervene when we see inclusion is not present. We strive to create a fully inclusive culture where all of our employees feel safe to bring their whole selves to work, they belong, and can speak up, share ideas and dilemmas to contribute fully at Shell.
