Our oil sands operation extracts bitumen from oil sands and converts it to synthetic crude oil.
Athabasca Oil Sands Project
Canada’s oil sands are an important source of energy. As part of our Athabasca Oil Sands Project we mine the resource and separate the heavy oil from the clay, sand and water before shipping it by pipeline to our Scotford Upgrader where it is converted (upgraded) into synthetic crude. We believe the long-term success of oil sands in the energy mix means being competitive both economically and environmentally.
Our Quest project will capture more than one million tonnes of CO2 emissions from Shell’s oil sands operations each year and store these emissions safely underground.
Some of the water we use to extract oil from the oil sands is recycled. We carefully manage waste water from our operations and work to reduce fresh water use.
We have developed and implemented a plan to manage our impact on the land and help protect the region’s biodiversity.
