He studied business economics at the Netherlands School of Economics in Rotterdam, the predecessor of Erasmus University. He specialised in accountancy.\u003C/p\u003E\n\u003Cp class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm; line-height: normal;\"\u003EAfter completing his studies, he joined the mining company Billiton. Following its acquisition by Royal Dutch/Shell Group in 1971, he moved to the then Anglo-Dutch company.\u003C/p\u003E\n\u003Cp class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm; line-height: normal;\"\u003EIn 1989, Herkströter was appointed Managing Director at Royal Dutch Petroleum Company. From 1992, he served as President of the Dutch arm of the Group. A year later, he succeeded the Briton Sir Peter Holmes as the Chief Executive of Royal Dutch/Shell Group.\u003C/p\u003E\n\u003Cp class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm; line-height: normal;\"\u003EIt later emerged that Herkströter had never given an interview upon taking office. Expectations that the former finance specialist would prove to be a colourless figure quickly proved unfounded. Within a year of his appointment, he announced a far-reaching restructuring aimed at improving the company’s performance. He also paved the way for investments in renewable energy sources such as solar and biomass, and increased the company’s focus on human rights.\u003C/p\u003E\n\u003Cp class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm; line-height: normal;\"\u003EIn early May 1998, Herkströter stepped down as Chief Executive. Unlike his predecessors - and in line with his own views - he did not move on to a supervisory board role.\u003C/p\u003E\n\u003Cp class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm; line-height: normal;\"\u003ECor Herkströter was a Commander of the Order of the Netherlands Lion, a Knight of the Order of Orange-Nassau, and an Honorary Citizen of Singapore. Hij studeerde bedrijfseconomie aan de Nederlandse Economische Hogeschool in Rotterdam, de voorloper van de Erasmus Universiteit. Hij specialiseerde zich in accountancy.\u003Cbr\u003E\n\u003Cbr\u003E\nNa zijn studie ging hij aan de slag bij het mijnbouwconcern Billiton. Vanuit die positie kwam hij na de overname door Koninklijke/Shell Groep in 1971 in dienst bij het destijds Nederlands-Britse concern.\u003Cbr\u003E\n\u003Cbr\u003E\nIn 1989 werd Herkströter benoemd tot directeur bij de “Koninklijke”. Vanaf 1992 is hij president-directeur van het Nederlandse smaldeel. Een jaar later volgde hij de Brit Sir Peter Holmes op als hoogste uitvoerende bestuurder van Koninklijke/Shell Groep.\u003Cbr\u003E\n\u003Cbr\u003E\nBij zijn aantreden heeft Herkströter nooit een interview gegeven, zo bleek. Maar van de verwachting dat de voorheen financiële man een grijze muis zal blijken te zijn, komt niets uit. Al een jaar na zijn aantreden kondigt Herkströter een vergaande herstructurering aan met als doel tot een verbetering van het rendement van het bedrijf te komen. Hij maakt de weg vrij voor investeringen in duurzame energie als zon en biomassa. Ook kwam er meer oog voor mensenrechten.\u003Cbr\u003E\n\u003Cbr\u003E\nBegin mei 1998 zwaaide de geboren Limburger af als hoogste uitvoerend bestuurder. Anders dan zijn voorgangers, en in lijn met zijn eigen kijk op zaken, schuift hij niet door als commissaris.\u003Cbr\u003E\n\u003Cbr\u003E\nCor Herkströter was Commandeur in de Orde van de Nederlandse Leeuw en Ridder in de orde Oranje-Nassau en Ereburger van Singapore.
