We see the use of carbon credits as one of many solutions to decarbonisation. We use a hierarchical “avoid, reduce and then compensate ” approach. Take, for example, a logistics company which can work to avoid emissions altogether by employing digital technologies to optimise the delivery routes of their heavy goods vehicle fleet, thereby avoiding unnecessary emissions from their vehicles. To reduce emissions further, the fleet manager may decide to invest in electric or liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered vehicles. Finally, where some emissions remain unavoidable, the company can choose to compensate for those emissions by retiring voluntary carbon credits.

Generation of voluntary carbon credits can make environmental projects financially viable where otherwise they would not be and therefore their existence is only guaranteed by the voluntary carbon credit market. Shell selects high-quality projects that, in addition to the CO2 reduction, offer broader value to society, such as improved livelihoods and biodiversity, clean water and improved air quality.

What is a carbon credit?

A carbon credit represents the avoidance or removal of one tonne of CO2. Every tonne of CO2 that is avoided or captured by a project carries a unique serial number which is recorded into a publicly accessible and independently operated registry. As a result, every credit can be tracked from its origin to the end user. These credits can then be traded among governments and businesses and are an effective way to achieve carbon neutrality for those emissions that cannot be avoided.

Benefits of voluntary carbon compensation

  • Meet your sustainability commitments

We can provide energy products combined with carbon credits to reduce or neutralise the emissions associated with the use of that product, or simply with carbon credits alone to help you compensate for all or part of your carbon footprint.

  • Create long-term sustainability value for your business

Investing in compensating emissions will help you to shape a more sustainable energy future.

  • Demonstrate leadership

Pushing the limit of what companies or organisations can do to combat climate change.

  • Appeal to your customers and employees

Create new sustainable products and inspire your workforce to engage with carbon-reduction activities.

Global

Environmental projects

Investment in Shell Environmental Products' portfolio of voluntary carbon projects contributes to the development of projects such as the Katingan Mentaya Project in Indonesia. The project prevents forest clearance, protecting vital habitats for 5 critically endangered species and directly employing 400 local people, while generating an average of 7.5 million verified credits annually; which is the same as taking 2 million cars off the roads each year.
