Tuen Mu-Chek Lap Kok, Hong Kong

Tuen Mu-Chek Lap Kok, Hong Kong

In Hong Kong’s New Territories, our team supplied the bitumen for the undersea tunnel that was a key part of this major road project linking the city to an artificial peninsula where the region’s biggest international airport is located.

M25 motorway, London

M25 motorway, London

The M25 is London’s main motorway ring road, serving thousands of motorists every day. Spanning five counties, it’s a major commuter artery and requires regular, ongoing maintenance. Shell has been a key partner helping to keep this vital road moving for over 30 years.

New Brighton Project, United Kingdom

New Brighton Project, United Kingdom

Part of our efforts to improve roads involve road safety and urban architecture. A good example of this is when we were involved in renovating a 9 kilometre stretch of seafront in Wirral, England. In total, 800 tonnes of coloured asphalt supplied by Tarmac incorporating Mexphalte C LT binder, was used to cover the promenade. A sandy finish designed to emulate the colours of the New Brighton coastline, gave it both durability and visual appeal.

The Rion-Antiron Bridge, Greece

The Rion-Antiron Bridge, Greece

This bridge is one of modern day's most complex civil engineering projects. At 2,252m it’s the longest stayed-girder bridge in the world, exceeding even the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. Shell Cariphalte© was chosen to cover the surface of the bridge and the two viaducts because of its resistance to rutting cracking, stripping and ageing.

Church of Plonéour-Lanvern, France

Church of Plonéour-Lanvern, France

This unique project saw Shell Bitumen help to resurface the central aisle of a church in France, in keeping with the traditional look and feel of the building. By combining our Mexphalte C© LT binder with sand and gravel from the quarry of Le Goasq in Scringnac, it was possible to achieve greater creativity in terms of the aisle’s colour compared to its previous surface.

Silverstone Circuit, UK

On a racetrack like Silverstone the surface experiences extremely high stress, particularly in the corners where there's a lateral force. We resurfaced Silverstone with a tailormade binder for the conditions to prevent stone from ‘chipping out’, ensuring a quicker, grippier track.

Zandvoort, The Netherlands

Certain challenges arose during the renovation of this popular track. The track was scheduled to be paved in February, when it was still cold and windy. Our special bitumen solution helped improve the workability of the asphalt during installation and was formulated to withstand the demands of the local weather conditions.

Bayan Mining Road, Indonesia

In East Kalimantan in Indonesia, we’re demonstrating how PG76 is the ideal bitumen product for the heavy traffic and high temperatures of the region’s mining road project. It’s currently being tested on a 30- kilometre stretch with a view to using it on the next 100 kilometres that needs re-paving.

Phuket Airport, Thailand

At Phuket’s busy airport, taxiway construction had to happen with extremely quick turnaround times. By developing a tailormade low temperature bitumen – a first product of its type to be used in the Asia region – we were able to complete resurfacing work within 6 hours

Suvarnabhumi Airport, Thailand

With maximum average surface temperatures of 72°C on its runways, Suvarnabhumi Airport asked Shell Bitumen to help develop a new specification of binders that could withstand the hot and humid conditions. We used the SUPERPAVE approach to create a surface that will be used on future maintenance at the airport.
