On-track, teams battle it out in the mileage challenge, competing within vehicle categories and energy classes to see which vehicle can travel the furthest on the least amount of energy.

Off-track, teams can win prizes for their achievements in the fields of vehicle design, safety, communications, technical innovation and perseverance.

2018 Off-track Winners



Green Team Twente
University of Twente, Netherlands

The team developed and executed the most strategic and comprehensive communications campaign of any team in the competition. They took a holistic approach, starting with a smart branding strategy and the use of analytics of various online and social media platforms to inform their content, channel and audience engagement strategies. From telling compelling stories about the team, the car and their journey, to smartly integrating online and social media with traditional media coverage and high-profile events, to engaging student teams past and present, as well as team sponsors and partners, Green Team Twente met each challenge and told a compelling story about their effort.

2nd place:

DNV GL Fuel Fighter
Norwegian University Of Science And Technology, Norway

The team set ambitious goals for their communications program, and while they didn’t always meet them, they recognized where they fell short and endeavored to improve through the course of the campaign and shifted tactics when necessary. They succeeded in showcasing their diversity and reaching their target audiences by featuring team members and securing coverage in their school newspaper and other media and tried innovative techniques like a campus Easter Egg Hunt that engaged students and educated them on the team’s effort and broader energy issues.

3rd place:

National Technical University Of Athens, Greece

The team worked hard to promote their effort through both traditional and social media channels, securing media coverage through every stage and developing interesting and engaging content, especially videos that emphasized the ‘handcrafted’ nature of their vehicle and the care the team took in building it. The team developed content to showcase the personalities of its members and showed initiative in recruiting other students with expertise in video filming and editing to support their effort, leading to higher quality content and stronger performance on their social media channels.

The Technical Innovation award goes to the team that demonstrates outstanding technical ingenuity along with optimal use of new materials, components and inventions. This year’s winner used an effective and simple approach to lower the under carriage aerodynamic drag of the steering wheels of their prototype vehicle.

Their innovative wheel hub was elegant, functional and of a compact design.

Vehicle Design (UrbanConcept)

The team showed a very deep understanding on engineering principles and the benefits and drawbacks of all of their concept decisions as well as down to a component level. For example, the compromise between an aerodynamically ideal shape and a more car-like shape of the exterior was well researched and understood so that the impact of their decision could be quantified. Through the application of simulation driven design decisions, all the sensitivities and impacts of the decisions on the performance were analysed and well understood. The complex interdependencies of all systems and components of the car are also reflected in team structure and management.

To sum up, TUfast showed a truly professional operation of an engineering development team, ready to tackle the task ahead.


Green Team Twente
University of Twente, Netherlands

Green Team Twente showed a more single-directional approach to car design towards a more efficient vehicle over a more practical one. The use of different simulation methods helped them understand impacts their design decisions might have on the vehicle performance. However, the interconnection between the different systems was not as thoroughly researched as in the winner’s car.

The drivetrain of the Twente car showed quite a unique and ingenious layout with multiple electrical motors that are active during different driving situations of the vehicle (acceleration/cruise).

Warsaw University Of Technology, Poland

Team SKAP 2 sparked our interest by a very unconventional approach to external aerodynamics with a Venturi-shaped rear end of the vehicle. The concept was chosen and further improved upon using simulation and wind tunnel tests, although completely different approaches were not taken into account.

Vehicle Design (Prototype)

Eco-Runner Team Delft
Delft University Of Technology, Netherlands

Eco-Runner Team Delft was chosen for several reasons. One of them is that they had an excellent team structure and communication that allowed them to effectively delegate, co-ordinate, and complete complicated tasks and bring all their work together effectively.
One very impressive aspect of the design was their ‘Neural Network’ which allowed them to strategically communicate with the driver the best time to throttle and coast around the track with the aid of 4G communication and coding.
Another impressive aspect particular to the design was the methodology behind how they reached their final aerodynamic design, which was achieved using a MatLab code that incorporated a particle swarm optimisation with the objective of minimising the surface area and thus drag caused by the turbulent flow around the vehicle. They also conducted feasibility wind tunnel testing to assist their CFD results.


Proto Insa Club
Insa Lyon, France

Another compelling design strategy belonged to Proto Insa Club, who took a manual iterative approach to their design with the feedback from CFD results, and have a driving strategy simulation to improve on their driving efficiency.

Hydrogreen Pollub
Lublin University Of Technology, Poland

Hydrogreen Pollub’s presentation was excellent, conducted thorough CFD simulations and physical testing to composite shaft parts using different glues and approaches.



National Technical University Of Athens, Greece

Team Prometheus displayed a great understanding of managing the risks across the whole project from design to the track.

Their driver care and safety management system was both progressive and innovative.

We were impressed with their attitude knowledge and belief that safety was an integral part of the journey.

Shell strives to put safety above all else in whatever it does. Particularly focusing on people, Prometheus demonstrated that they are not only focusing on the car but also the health and well-being of all those involved in the project. On this occasion that is what separated them from the other teams and why they are worthy winners of the off track safety award.

Perseverance and Spirit of the Event


UGATU Racing Team
Ufa State Aviation Technical University, Russia

UGATU Racing Team is awarded the Perseverance and Spirit of the Event award for their exceptional effort to get to the event in London from the city of Ufa. The team, the only one from Russia, did not only put a tremendous amount of effort into the development of their car but also went over and above on their journey from the South Ural area to get to London driving 4000km for more than 2 days.

2017 Off-Track Award Winners

Technical innovation award

Winner: Microjoule-La Joliverie, Lycee Saint-Joseph La Joliverie, France

Shell Eco-marathon record-setters Microjoule showed that significant advances in internal combustion engines can still be made. Through the use of advanced materials, coatings and design, they further reduced friction, heat loss and weight to improve the efficiency of their record-breaking compressed natural gas engine.


Vehicle design award (Prototype)

Winner: Poseidon, Piraeus University of Applied Sciences, Greece

Team Poseidon won because their vehicle was extremely aerodynamic and precisely built. Their vehicle was also made from recycled material, was visually appealing and very safe.

UrbanConcept: No award this year


Safety award

Winner: TUC Eco Racing, Technical University of Crete, Greece

This hydrogen car team won for their excellent blend of vehicle design and safety, as well as their excellent approach to safety while working at the event. The team also shared some of their hydrogen sensors with another team – demonstrating the Shell Eco-marathon spirit of collaboration.


Communications award

Joint Winners: Green Team Twente, University of Twente, the Netherlands and H2politO, Politecnico Di Torino, Italy

The standard was so high that the communications award was shared by two teams. Both impressed with their professionalism, strategic approach and enthusiasm for getting the message across in both social and traditional media.


Perseverance and spirit of the event award

Winner: UGATU Racing Team, Ufa State Aviation Technical University, Russia

This award recognises teams who have overcome struggles by working together. The first-time competitors towed their car on a trailer for 5,000 km to get to the event. Like many teams, they also experienced technical issues on arrival but worked together to pass technical inspection and get onto the track.

2017 DWC Teams

After several days of sunny skies and strong competition, the famously fickle English weather brought an abrupt end to the final of the Shell Eco-marathon Drivers’ World Championship (DWC). The grand final had to be abandoned mid-race as rain hammered down on the track in east London. With the wet weather making it unsafe to finish the race, a US high-school team from the Saint Thomas Academy in Minnesota was declared the winner because it was the fastest in qualifying.

2016 Off-Track Award Winners

Communications Award

Team Prometheus, National Technical University Of Athens, Greece

Prometheus had two clear objectives: raise awareness and raise funding or sponsorship. They succeeded and exceeded in both by securing international crowd funding. Prometheus started by contacting the Greek embassy to get a list of Greek ex-pats from around the world. They ended up with 104 separate investors giving them a total of €5,800. Prometheus also used every means of communication, from TV to Press and digital, as well as their own website.


Technical Innovation Award

Team Prometheus, National Technical University Of Athens, Greece

The novel innovation that made Prometheus rise to the top was the highly advanced, near-autonomous advanced driving control system in their vehicle. Their driver pushes a button, and from that point the vehicle uses GPS and other technologies to assess where they are and what forces are acting upon them. If the driver gets off the button and then returns to the system, it recovers from that perturbation and looks for many other optimisations to complete the lap as effectively as possible – as an almost-autonomous, almost autopilot system.

Protype category

Team H2politO, Politecnico Di Torino, Italy

Team H2politoO won because their vehicle is not only efficient and ecological, with great aerodynamics, but also beautifully engineered inside. The design was completely thought through – very professional.

UrbanConcept category

Team UC SHELL ECO, Ostfold University College, Norway

Team UC SHELL ECO was a winner as their car is not just an oversized prototype that could never be put on the road but as close to the standards of real production as possible, which is a true reflection of the UrbanConcept category.


Safety Award

Team TUC Eco-Racing, Technical University of Crete, Greece

TUC Eco-Racing won for its excellent blend of vehicle design and safety, as well as occupational safety. A lot of thought went into the structural integrity of the vehicle – their chassis had crumple zones that deform to protect the driver, while being very structurally rigid. They balanced safety, performance and design.


Perseverance and Team Spirit Award

Team LSA Khadi AIS, Kharkibv National Automobile And Highway University, Ukraine

This award celebrates teams who have overcome struggles by working together to achieve success. Ukrainian team LSA Khadi AIS won this category because they have been through the most hardship in the Shell Eco-marathon Europe. Following issues with their Visas, the team has battled on, despite not all team members making it to the event.

They have also faced issues with their car, working hard to replace a broken part once they finally arrived in London. Despite all this, they passed technical inspection.

Drivers’ World Championship

The winner of the first Shell Eco-marathon Drivers’ World Championship was team Universitas Pendidikan from Indonesia. It was a hard-fought final race around a course that challenged many teams over the four-day event. But team Bumi Siliwangi’s battery-electric car from Bandung took the chequered flag. Sunday’s sensational victory wins the Indonesians a well-deserved week in Italy with the Scuderia Ferrari Formula 1 team, receive coaching on how they can improve their technology for next year’s Shell Eco-marathon.
