Shell GameChanger supports Windswept’s Kite Turbine Automation project
Feb 28, 2022
A panel of Shell technology experts has selected Windswept and Interesting Ltd, a start-up company based in Shetland, UK, to receive advice and funding through the Shell GameChanger programme.
This support is aimed at enabling Windswept to demonstrate the viability of autonomous Kite Turbine operation. Kite Turbines are a new class of Rotary Airborne Wind Energy System. They use a simple and low-cost network of kites to turn a generator on an anchored ground-station. New performance data, control systems and handling equipment will make the previously human operated launching and landing operations safer and more reliable. The project will assess the scaling potential and offshore deployment requirements of Kite Turbines. Kite Turbines have exceptionally high Power/Weight. They exploit tensioned network design for scaling lower-cost energy, for stability, and for safety.
