Majnoon has a massive amount of oil. The Iraqi Government estimates it to hold around 38 billion barrels of oil in place! It’s quite a remarkable project to be a part of.

Community spirit

I decided to apply for the Shell Graduate Programme while in my final year at Brunel.

"For me, Shell is one of the most technically advanced IOCs (International Oil Companies) in the industry and the opportunity to start my career here was incredibly appealing."

When I found out about the projects in the Middle East, I knew Iraq was where I wanted to be.

It’s been an ambition of mine to give something back to the Iraqi community and I’m glad to have the opportunity to do that. Shell is involved in numerous on-going projects to help build good relations locally.

"It’s a great feeling to know I’m contributing to causes like this – it’s all part of developing a rewarding career at Shell."

Diverse opportunities

Training on the Shell Graduate Programme has been beneficial in many ways. It’s compulsory to attend career development training courses. These are great opportunities to network with Shell colleagues from a variety of cultures.

It’s surprising how diverse the organisation is. I’ve met people from Australia, Singapore, Brunei, Malaysia, America and Nigeria, and recently

"I was in Istanbul meeting with the Ministry of Oil. I wonder how many graduates can say they’ve done that."

Career development

Before I joined the programme, I didn’t expect to learn so much so quickly. For the first month my line manager supported me, but soon after he stepped back and gradually increased my accountability. Before the end of the year, I was the Company Site Representative and leading my own team.

It’s this kind of first-hand experience that sets Shell’s Graduate Programme apart from many others. Many graduates nowadays spend a lot of time in the office, where you’re limited to what you can learn. I think anyone interested in our industry should gain regular field experience – it shows grads the varying responsibilities in oil and gas.

For now, I want to continue building on-site experience in the Middle East and other parts of the world, with a view to joining the operations team in Maintenance & Integrity. Eventually, I want to progress into the engineering or design phase where I’ll be able to implement things on paper and have more influence in how our operations are executed.

Shell is giving me the experience I want and the development I need to help me go further in my career.

"To learn, to develop, to network and to make friends – that’s exactly what the programme means to me."
