Challenge
SPO expressed interest in incorporating training on understanding of oil analysis, lubricants and the Shell RLA report as part of its in-house training for its engineers at its training facility in Loyang, Singapore.
This Shell Marine Products training programme seeks to equip engineers with in-depth understanding of oil analysis and lubricants, and of interpreting the Shell RLA report effectively. A visit to the Shell RLA laboratory was subsequently arranged for a team of SPO engineers and trainers to improve their understanding of the training programme. Though the visit was fruitful, it was difficult for SPO to incorporate out-of-classroom visits to the laboratory as part of its monthly training schedule for the engineers, given the time constraints.
Solution
Instead of mobilising groups of engineers from SPO to visit its laboratory, Shell Marine Products suggested assigning a dedicated lubricants specialist to conduct a monthly training programme at SPO’s training facility instead. This alternative arrangement was well received by SPO, as it can modify its training schedule to include the additional training by Shell Marine Products.
Outcome
The training programme is conducted by a lubricants specialist from Shell Marine Products as part of SPO’s ongoing inhouse engineering training programme. The monthly programme is specially targeted at SPO’s engineers.
Value
Engineers who have undergone the Shell RLA training have given positive feedback. The engineers from SPO have improved understanding of the importance of oil analysis and are better equipped to implement effective lubrication practices and interpret the Shell RLA reports more effectively. In the long term, this investment in training will translate to a larger pool of welltrained engineers, better equipment reliability and performance, and cost savings.
