On April 17 2019, NGC and Shell (Shanghai) Technology Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as Shell) signed a technology cooperation agreement in Nanjing. The two companies will work closely together in a variety of fields including:

  • Renewable energy technology R&D
  • Energy utilization and equipment intelligence management
  • Power exchange and technology co-development
  • Communication of the benefits of effective lubrication solutions for wind power gearboxes and power transmission systems

During the productive meeting, Mr. Gary Sun, Technical Director of NGC, and Dr. Cameron Watson, General Manager Lubricants Technology-AP of Shell (Shanghai) Technology Center, reached an agreement on technical cooperation on behalf of the two companies.

NGC and Shell have established a solid foundation for cooperation, with Shell providing high performance gear oil for the yaw and pitch gearboxes of NGC for over a decade. The two companies have also conducted multiple joint technical seminars and product trials which showcased the importance of effective lubrication management and how it can provide efficient solutions for wind power drives. By the end of 2018, the cumulative number of yaw/pitch gearboxes filled with Shell lubricants reached 90000 units.

In 2015, NGC and Shell started the field trial for Shell Omala S5 Wind, an advanced fully synthetic gear oil with an industry leading ten-year warranty1. The trial was designed to ensure the next generation of Shell Omala S5 Wind 320 provides outstanding performance, which is crucial to meeting the rapidly developing gearbox design requirements of the wind power industry.

Mr. Gary Sun indicated in the April meeting that NGC is steering its core direction towards renewable energy, along with energy-saving and energy efficiency technologies development. The company’s mission and vision of "Geared for a Better Future" is a perfect match for Shell's renewable energy development strategy.

The two companies will collaborate in expertise to boost the progress of renewable energy technology with joint engineering development in transmission technology and system scheme application, to seize the macro green development opportunity afforded by the Made-in-China 2025 strategy.

Troy Chapman, Vice President, Global B2B and OEM Marketing, Shell, said that the technology cooperation with NGC is the "blossom and fruit" of years of collaboration between the two companies, and part of Shell’s strategy to deliver more and cleaner energy while lowering Total Cost of Ownership for wind farm operators.

The development of China's wind power industry has now entered into a steady growth stage. After fierce market development, the status of investment in the wind power industry has been curbed to a much healthier stage with the industry development model having been constantly upgraded and transformed.

The increasing demand for wind power investment in China provides significant business opportunities to facilitate further growth - also stimulated by the strategy of "One Belt and One Road" – the global development strategy adopted by the Chinese government involving infrastructure development and investments into the wind power industry.

As one of the world's leading manufacturers of wind power gearboxes, NGC covers more than 30 countries and regions, with a full range of products covering 750 kW to 7 MW. NGC also works closely with the leading wind turbine OEMs such as GE and SiemensGamesa.

NGC and Shell will cooperate extensively in the field of renewable energy technology development to advocate new energy efficiency utilization to help the wind power industry achieve new heights when it comes to equipment manufacturing, aftermarket operation and maintenance.
