If you don’t have the right tools, it’s hard to do your best work - and it’s just as vital your equipment maintenance programme covers all the bases too. For proper lubrication in the metals sector, there are three key areas to consider:
1. Know your Inventory
First of all it is vital to have an accurate, current understanding of what lubricants you have on site - and these stocks should reflect the specific pressures your equipment will be under, especially if you are intending to increase production. It is also important to understand the condition of all your lubricants, and if they are still suitable for use.
2. Check your Grease systems
Before equipment is used, a health check should be performed to validate all centralised grease lubrication systems, as well as a system delivery check. Also check for loose lines at bearings, to ensure grease is delivered effectively - and be sure to check grease consumption rates regularly, too.
3. Optimise your Lubricants
To make sure your lubricants are performing optimally, check machinery oil level, oil temperature and system pressure are all correct. You should also take quarterly oil samples from vital equipment to check for contamination, while monitoring for oil leaks - and repairing as needed. Finally, as always, keep monitoring lubricant consumption.
