The figure shows the equipment and business benefits of using Shell Fuel Oil Plus and Shell Fuel Oil Extra across the 3 parts of the heat generation system. The first part on the left is the fuel system comprising of storage tank, strainers, pump, strainers and pre-heater. Sludge in the storage tank and overall deposits are reduced. Maintenance is also reduced and the reliability of the whole equipment is increased.
The middle part is the boiler and burner system comprising of burner and boiler. Deposits are reduced, combustion and fuel efficiency are improved.
The third part to the right is the flue gas system which is the chimney. Soot, smoke and emissions are reduced.
Fuel oil never burns completely and, with time, the build-up of deposits can be detrimental. Equipment can become less reliable, resulting in higher levels of waste, efficiency loss, unplanned shutdowns and more frequent maintenance.

Let’s see how fuel oil plus works. Here is a typical boiler system running on fuel oil.
The fuel oil travels from the storage tanks through a series of strainers, pumps and pre-heaters before it is burnt in burner in the boiler. The combustion gases heat steam or oil before they are emitted through the chimney.

All fuel oils contain heavy molecules call asphaltenes which tend to build up as deposits.

These deposits then settle in the storage tanks as sludge.

In time, the sludge makes its way to the pumps suction line and back into the fuel system causing blockage and disrupting the fuel supply to the boilers.

Strainers remove solid impurities from the fuel. With time, strainers get blocked due to sludging tendency of fuel oil. This inevitably leads to downtime and more frequent maintenance. An oil droplet is burnt up progressively from outside to inside. In the end, leaving a core of unburned fuel called Senna sphere. The Sena spheres formed the deposits in the boiler and the smoke in the chimney.
