Mass balance accounting approach
Manufacturers need independent verification of their sustainability claims. Mass balance accounting is an established approach that ensures the sources and processing of sustainable feedstocks are verified. Independent organisations certify this process, bringing transparency and credibility to sustainability claims.
What is mass balance?
Mass balance is a broadly accepted accounting approach that allows the manufacturing supply chain to mix sustainable materials with conventional materials using existing infrastructure. The mass balance approach is also cost-effective as it allows the mixing and co-processing of conventional and sustainable resources in the same facility rather than building new plants.
An independent third-party verification organisation tracks each step of the value chain, from the sourcing of sustainable resources to the co-processing of final products, certifying that a verified quantity of sustainable resources has displaced non-sustainable resources.

Black Lines, like conveyor belts slide across the screen carrying laundry detergent bottles, shampoo bottles, plastic cups and other plastic items. The animation zooms in on one of the conveyor belts and shows the plastic items falling off of the conveyor belt.
[Narrator]
Consumer demand for sustainable products continues to grow.

A grid system with yellow and blue squares of various sizes appear. One of the conveyor belts slide across the screen carrying laundry detergent bottles, shampoo bottles, plastic cups and other plastic items.
[Narrator]
Manufacturers are looking for affordable and efficient ways to meet these demands.

A blue background fades in with line drawings of a factory. Question marks, dollar signs, Euro signs, and pound signs are displayed in the foreground of the scene. The conveyor belt with plastic items continues from left to right across the screen. Items begin to fall off the end of the conveyor belt about 75% of the way across the screen. Next, the question marks and money symbols turn to light bulbs.
[Narrator]
But how can that be done without disrupting existing manufacturing processes or significantly increasing the cost?

Blue background and factory scene fades out. White background comes in and approximately ten circles, squares and triangles jump from the bottom of the screen to the top, then fall back down again as if they are thrown.

Mass Balance
[Narrator]
Mass Balance could be a critical piece of the puzzle.

[Animated sequence]
A purple background fades in. A grid of small blue and yellow squares appears with six line drawings of small factories overtop of them. These line drawings pulse while narrator speaks. Next, lines connect the grid squares and factories, with symbols of a leaf, water, and movement along the connecting lines. Two of the factories disappear, and are replaced with a clipboard and calculator line drawing.
[Narrator]
Mass Balance allows the manufacturing process to mix materials with conventional fossil materials without creating new manufacturing facilities or infrastructure. Mass Balance is an established accounting approach…

A purple background remains while the grid and factories fade out.
[Animated sequence]
A yellow line crawls from left to right across the purple screen with yellow squares along the line, green barrels appear, then a factory, then a brown barrel. The outlines of these drawings continue to flow through narration.
[Narrator]
… that provides certification of sustainable elements to the end product.

Purple background fades out. White background slides in from both left and right to meet in the middle.
[Animated sequence]
There is a blue square on the left taking up a quarter of the screen and a yellow square on the right taking up a quarter of the screen. On the blue square is a zig zag line with an arrow moving along it. On the yellow square is a sand timer with sand falling from the top to the bottom.
These squares decrease in size and the blue square now has a cloud and a barrel inside it. A black line appears to move from the blue square to the yellow square. The yellow square now has a rail car with a substance in it.
The yellow square expands up about 75% of the screen and now features a recycle symbol, a scientific beaker and scientific test tubes all outlines pulse.
[Narrator]
The method accounts for sustainable material through every step in the manufacturing process. In the chemicals industry, conventional material can be replaced with biomass or post used waste to create more sustainable chemicals as conventional feedstocks.

White background fades to red. Shapes of various sizes and colors seem to be thrown from below the screen. These shapes hang in the air and then slowly fall to the bottom of the screen. The screen fades to white.
[Narrator]
This enables a phased approach as they transition to a more sustainable solution. No separate facilities need to be built to segregate the materials and the production output is the same.

White background fades in with an orange square taking up 80% of the screen. Various shapes in various colors seem to be thrown up in the air. These shapes hover in the air. This orange area with shapes shrinks to 25% of the screen and moves to the top left corner. A yellow square, 10% of the screen, appears in the bottom right corner with an outline of a badge with a check mark in the middle of it.

Scene fades to a completely orange background. Outlines of plastic containers and solid color plastic containers are thrown into the air. These containers bounce on the screen. Graphs appear next to the containers with various percentages indicating fill levels including: 75%, 27%, and 22%. All products fall from the screen.
[Narrator]
While the end customer can’t determine exactly what proportion of their product is made from sustainable materials, they can substantiate that a certain percentage of overall supply is made from sustainable materials.

Key benefits:
Certifiable
Manufacturers can trust sustainability initiatives because they are governed by independent standards organisations.
Cost efficient
The mass balance approach uses existing infrastructure rather than building new plants. This provides the opportunity for companies to initiate sustainable offerings in a phased approach without investing in new infrastructure or processing facilities.
Quality
Products retain the same performance characteristics as their conventional counterparts and are equally strong, effective and durable.
Transparency
Each step in the value chain is certified to ensure sustainable resources are used and the chain is not broken at any point.
Efficiency
