The Shell Group aims to reduce the net carbon footprint of its energy products by around 65% by 2050, and as an interim measure, by 30% by 2035. Shell aims to be a net-zero emissions energy business by 2050 or sooner.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThis ambition provides an opportunity for Shell Catalysts &amp; Technologies to establish a distinct identity within energy transition initiatives. This means refiners can run their assets at lower temperature for longer and use less energy in addition to getting more valued products.\u003C/li\u003E\r\n\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cb\u003ERefining\u003C/b\u003E&nbsp;– The combination of various design factors, such as fractionation improvements, low gas circulation in the high pressure loop and improved heat integration, helps to reduce CO\u003Csub\u003E2\u003C/sub\u003E emissions by 5­–20% compared to standard designs.\u003C/li\u003E\r\n\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cb\u003EGas treating\u003C/b\u003E&nbsp;– Our&nbsp;\u003Cb\u003E\u003Ca href=\"https://www.shell.com/business-customers/catalysts-technologies/licensed-technologies/emissions-standards/tail-gas-treatment-unit.html\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003Etail-gas treating\u003C/a\u003E\u003C/b\u003E&nbsp;process features a low-temperature catalyst, which helps to reduce steam consumption and solvent circulation rates, which reduces power requirements.\u003C/li\u003E\r\n\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cb\u003EGas liquefaction\u003C/b\u003E&nbsp;– Shell’s dual mixed refrigerant (DMR)&nbsp;\u003Cb\u003E\u003Ca href=\"https://www.shell.com/business-customers/catalysts-technologies/licensed-technologies/lng-technology.html\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003ELNG liquefaction technology\u003C/a\u003E\u003C/b\u003E&nbsp;improves LNG production in challenging, ambient conditions. Shell believes this is a key technology for reducing CO\u003Csub\u003E2\u003C/sub\u003E emissions in the energy sector and for other carbon-intensive industrial processes, such as cement and steel making.\u003C/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EShell is helping to develop large-scale commercial CCS projects and is an owner-operator of a global refinery network, while Shell Catalysts &amp; Technologies has developed two leading carbon-capture technologies.\u003C/p\u003E\n\u003Cul\u003E\n\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cb\u003ELP\u003C/b\u003E&nbsp;\u003Cb\u003E\u003Ca href=\"https://www.shell.com/business-customers/catalysts-technologies/licensed-technologies/emissions-standards/co2-capture-systems.html\" target=\"_self\"\u003ECO\u003Csub\u003E2\u003C/sub\u003E Capture system\u003C/a\u003E\u003C/b\u003E&nbsp;–&nbsp;This technology is designed to capture CO\u003Csub\u003E2\u003C/sub\u003E from low-pressure (LP) streams, including flue gas. At a power station in Canada, this technology is capturing one metric tonne per year of CO\u003Csub\u003E2\u003C/sub\u003E that is compressed, transported through pipelines and used for enhanced oil recovery in nearby oilfields.\u003C/li\u003E\n\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cb\u003EHP Capture Systems\u003C/b\u003E&nbsp;–&nbsp;This technology is designed to capture CO\u003Csub\u003E2\u003C/sub\u003E from high-pressure (HP) process streams. This could have a major impact on the energy sector and refiners as, worldwide, about 50% of refinery output is directed towards road transportation fuels, so any substantial moves toward electrification have significant potential to reduce demand for diesel and gasoline.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EMeanwhile, refiners face other challenges including pressure on margins and utilisation, responding to tightening environmental regulations and finding ways to minimise the amount of bottoms sent to the bunker fuel pool.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EShell, which plans to reshape its portfolio over the next decade with both divestments and investments, has key insights here and Shell Catalysts &amp; Technologies can help the energy sector in the following areas:\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cul\u003E\r\n\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cb\u003EDemand shift from fuels to petrochemical feed\u003C/b\u003E&nbsp;– We work with refiners to help ensure that they are directing hydrocarbons to the highest-value application by providing differentiated catalysts and technologies in innovative configurations to open customers’ operating windows and provide additional flexibility.\u003C/li\u003E\r\n\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cb\u003ETransform refinery bottom ends&nbsp;\u003C/b\u003E– Declining fuel oil demand and highly complex assets coming onstream mean there is a clear need to invest in residue conversion projects. These can be highly capital intensive, but we have developed key insights for achieving higher rates of return through revamping existing process units.\u003C/li\u003E\r\n\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cb\u003EShift to higher margin products\u003C/b\u003E&nbsp;– In some regions, lubricant base oil feed can command a higher margin than middle distillates.
