We recognise the aviation industry’s need to reduce emissions urgently. While electric and hydrogen technologies as well as Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) are still in development and being scaled, we need immediate solutions to help bridge the gap and start decarbonising.

This is why Shell Aviation now offers a Carbon Offset service alongside the fuels we sell to help your business compensate for carbon emissions today. Our latest offering aims to help you along your net-zero emissions journey and keep flying. In some markets, bundling offsets with our fuels in this way is referred to as Carbon Neutral* Fuel.

*CO2 compensation does not imply that there is no environmental impact from the production and use of the product as associated emissions remain in the atmosphere. CO2 compensation is not a substitute for switching to lower emission energy solutions or reducing the use of fossil fuels. Shell businesses focus first on emissions that can be avoided or reduced and only then, compensate the remaining emissions. “Carbon neutral” or “CO2 compensated” indicates that Shell will engage in a transaction where an amount of CO2 equivalent to the value of the remaining CO2e emissions associated with the [raw material extraction, transport, production, distribution] [and usage /end-of-life (if Lubricants or other non-energy product)] of the [product] are compensated through the purchase and retirement of carbon credits generated from CO2 compensation projects. Although these carbon credits have been generated in accordance with international carbon standards, the compensation may not be exact. CO2e (CO2 equivalent) refers to CO2, CH4, N2O. This offer is only available in selected countries. Please contact your Shell Aviation sales representative to find out more.

Aviation is fundamental to the world economy and keeping people connected. Choosing carbon credits as the primary means of decarbonisation has the advantage of avoiding the need to redesign aircraft or airport infrastructure.

To help you start decarbonising with ease, we have combined jet fuel or avgas purchases and carbon credits in one convenient package. Our high-quality carbon credits come from projects assessed using approved greenhouse case accounting methodologies, with all emissions quantifiable.

Nature-based solutions (NBS) play a crucial role in the journey to net zero. These solutions allow us to harness the power of nature to help compensate for carbon emissions that are currently unavoidable. At the same time, we can help contribute to restoring and preserving natural ecosystems.

We invest in a range of NBS projects around the world, including:

Deep in Peru’s high forest between the Andes and the Amazon basin, this project focuses on restoring degraded forests with new agroforestry systems growing cacao and coffee. It also provides income for local communities and protects the area’s unique biodiversity, including 28 species of high conservation value.

2.5 million carbon credits generated on average each year
1.6 million hectares of forest protected

This project protects 150,000 hectares of peat swamp forest in Indonesia. These protected peatlands are home to several critically endangered species such as Bornean orangutans and proboscis monkeys. The project also works with local villages by providing jobs to alleviate poverty.

7.5 million carbon credits generated on average each year
149,800 hectares of intact peat swamp forest protected

Shell Aviation Carbon Offset service will be available at several Shell locations across the globe. By combining conventional fossil fuels with certified carbon credits, we can help customers to compensate for carbon emissions produced during flight.

This offer will provide pilots and businesses a solution to fly better today. Over the past decade, Shell Aviation has invested millions of dollars into researching and identifying solutions to remove the lead from our fuel products. To date, there has been little success in identifying a method to move to unleaded avgas. In the meantime, combining our Carbon Offset service with our Avgas sales serves as an interim solution and plays an important part in Shell's and our customers’ goal to decarbonise.

Canada is the first market to offer Shell Aviation Carbon Neutral* Fuels. We will be expanding to more markets in the years to come.
