A) Nyhamna land facility
The natural gas produced from Ormen Lange is processed at the onshore facility Nyhamna, 120 kilometres from the field.

Pipelines transport natural gas to the processing plant at Nyhamna.

The wells were drilled through “templates” – structures containing slots for well equipment – located nearly 1,000 metres below the surface of the sea.

E) Reservoir
The reservoir covers an area of about 350 km2 and is about 3,000 metres below sea level.

1) From land to sea
Here the land facility joins with the offshore installations, including pipelines carrying anti-freeze, bundles of power cables and gas pipelines.

2) Gas separation
The process of separating gas and liquids starts here. Gas rises and is collected in large pipes, while gravity causes light oil and water fall to the bottom.

3) Gas processing
Water is removed in a dehydration tower. A drop in pressure and temperature causes the remaining  light oil to condense, leaving dry gas.

4) Gas compression
The gas is compressed to a pressure of around 230 bars and exported through a pipeline to the UK.

5) Liquid separation
The remaining liquids end up in a large tank. Water and anti-freeze are relatively heavy and fall to the bottom, while light oil settles on top. Each is then pumped to the relevant area of the plant.

6) Anti-freeze facility
The reservoir temperature can be as high as 96°C but temperatures on the seabed are below freezing. Chemicals injected to prevent freezing in the pipes are recycled.

7) Water treatment plant
Water from the reservoir, which can contain traces of oil and anti-freeze, is treated here. A biochemical treatment plant uses bacteria to consume impurities.

8) Storage caverns
Light oil is stored in two large caverns deep in rock. Ground water creates overpressure which prevents the oil seeping out.

9) Export quay
Tankers transport light oil to refineries all over the world where it is refined for use in products such as petrol and plastics.

10) Safety zone
The flare stack at Nyhamna is 65 metres high and functions as a safety valve. The rock-covered surrounding area is the safety zone.

11) Control room and administration
The entire facility is managed and monitored from the control room in the administration building. The building also contains a laboratory, workshop and emergency response station.
