Shell sponsors the publishing of a comprehensive Green Guide to Explore Oman
This is a book for those prepared to look beyond the usual experience of Oman’s great outdoors. Its central message is for us all to make the most of what the Sultanate has to offer in a responsible, sustainable manner. It calls upon readers to be more socially conscious, more aware of the environment, and to leave a positive legacy of their visit. And this should not detract from your experience – indeed it will enhance your experience, allowing you to more thoroughly enjoy Oman’s stunning environment, varied wildlife, rich culture and intriguing history.
Discovering the ‘real’ Oman involves adventuring beyond the luxury of the five star accommodation and travel that most people encounter here. It requires you to make a meaningful connection with people, places and nature, through exploration, understanding and respect. By allowing the essence of Oman to come to you in its most natural form, you will be rewarded with a lasting experience of the very best that this magnificent country has to offer.
With carefully researched information from leading experts in their field, the book covers the entire country and is divided into three main eco-regions: Mountains & Wadis, Coasts & Islands, and Deserts. Its also has chapters on how to travel around Oman in the most responsible way, how to plan your adventure, learn about what you may encounter, and be prepared for safety and first aid.
The core message of the book is contained within a dedicated series of ‘Green Codes’, the first of their kind in Oman, which give you guidance on how best to responsibly enjoy your experience, whether its driving off-road, discovering the desert, hiking or biking up a mountain, diving or snorkelling over a coral reef, watching whales and dolphins, nesting turtles or birds, exploring caves, rock climbing, camping wild, picnicking on the beach, visiting castles and forts, or even buying souvenirs, interacting with local people or ordering from a menu.
The basic message is: get more from your experience and minimise your impact on the environment and local people at the same time.
“Three authors have taken over three years to complete this work, and have gathered knowledge from resident and foreign experts on their quest to provide a comprehensive and credible guide that provides you with 185 pages of the requisite information and then leaves you free, in that special way that Oman has to offer, to explore”, said Robert Baldwin, the key author of the guide.
With a foreword from His Highness Sayyid Tarik bin Shabib Al Said, Patron of the Environment Society of Oman, and sponsored by Shell Development Oman, the Green Guide to Exploring Oman is a whole new approach to enjoying the Sultanate in line with the most responsible tourism practices and targets both residents and visitors to the country.
“The theme of Environment is as an integral pillar of Shell’s social investment programme in Oman” said John Blascos, Shell Country Chairman in Oman.
“We are very proud to sponsor this unique and incredible guide that explains how to explore and enjoy Oman’s natural landscapes and destinations in an environmentally responsible manner,” John added.
It is worth mentioning that this book is printed on recycled and sustainably-sourced paper, inks are made from non-polluting vegetable dyes and the entire printing process followed the very highest environmental standards in the industry, minimising waste, pollution and environmental impacts at all stages of production.
