About Us

The aim of the Shell Business Operations, Chennai is to provide the Group with operational excellence through highlighting and utilizing process improvements and functional efficiencies as well as by leveraging economies of scale. Currently, the Chennai center provides a wide range of standardized, high quality, and efficient, common financial processes, that meet business requirements and are improved upon year on year driving operational excellence through all services, projects, advice and expertise for the Shell Group. 

Set up in September 2007, the Chennai center has grown rapidly and has crossed the 2000 staff mark. The center is located in the RMZ Millennia Business Park, where the Shell campus is a Leed Platinum building with world class infrastructure. The business is expected to grow further in the coming years and infrastructural additions to support this have been planned. There is a strong focus at SBO on safety & well-being of staff and on its three core values: Compliance, Intervention & Respect.

The main focus in Chennai is on Finance Operations which supports delivery of the global Finance functional plan. There is also an Offer-to-Cash team, driving value through managing the end to end process of customer service. Also, the ‘Downstream India’ - Customer Services Team that handles lubricant depot ordering within the country is based out of Chennai. The Operations Team manages the center facilities and supports business partners’ operations on site. The processes strive to drive quality standards up within the shared environment, improving performance, increasing efficiency, reducing business and operational risk, and ensuring consistency. 

The processes required to meet the growing business needs are:

Expenditure - Administer vendor accounts, Workflow Management, Invoice Processing, Process invoices & expense claims, Payment Initiation, Process payments, Controls, Disbursement Audit

Revenue – Invoice customers, Administer customer accounts, Document Management, Billing, Cash Allocation, Debt Chasing, Controls.

Reporting & Analysis

  • Managed Close - Group Reporting – GARANCE, Inter-Reporting, General Ledger & Period END, Intra Group, Financial Accounting. 
  • Capital & Assets - Projects/ Fixed Assets, Capitalization, Fixed Assets Reporting, Project Accounting. 
  •  Treasury - Bank Account Management, Cash Forecasting & Banking / TBO. 
  • Statutory Reporting - Prepare Statutory Books, Statutory Financial Statements & Disclosure Notes based on Country GAAPs, Co-ordinate with Country Statutory Auditors, Directors & Legal for sign off and submission of accounts, Implement and Maintain Standardized Statutory Reporting Process Globally, Support Legal Entity Rationalization. 
  •  Management Information - Management Internal Reporting, Variance Analysis, Decision Support, Budgeting & Planning.

Taxation - Direct Taxes, Indirect Taxes, Transfer Pricing.

Settlements - Invoice Processing, Billing, Collections, Freight / Shipping, Gas Accounting. 

Manual of Authority - Maintenance of the MOA Tool, Adding Positions, Assigning Authorities, Modification to Access, Guidance to Users.

Governance, Risk and Assurance - Risk, Business Controls, Financial Controls, Risk Management Program, Shell Control Framework.

GSAP - SOD Checks, Monitor SOD Reporting for SOX, C11.12 E Compliance & In-house Role Mapping Databank Maintenance, Updation.

Continuous Improvement - Shell Six Sigma & LEAN, Service Delivery Management.

Offer to Cash - Driving value through managing the end to end process beginning with an offer that the customer sees as more valuable than our competition, and closing with a deal that generates the returns needed to deliver our business plan and strategy.

SBO Chennai is hiring aggressively and this will continue over the next few years. We also provide a large amount of process and language trainings.
