Shell Technology Centre Bangalore
The centre delivers high-end technical studies, projects and technical services for Shell across the globe
Shell Technology Centre Bangalore, STCB, is one of the three global hubs for technology, after Houston and Amsterdam, in the Projects & Technology business of Royal Dutch Shell. It seeks to deliver advanced technical studies, projects and services for Shell around the world as well as supporting Shell’s interests in India. The services span upstream exploration and production activities as well as downstream chemical, gas and refinery operations.
STCB provides access to cutting-edge Indian talent and resources to Shell worldwide. By the end of 2010, STCB employed around 700 professionals and has plans to grow to about 1500 in the near future. Recruitment at STCB is currently focused on graduates in India and experienced Indian professionals. The integrated technology centre offers high-end technical careers in a global environment for people who see India as their base.
The Energy Challenge
The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that energy use could grow by more than half over the next quarter century, and double by 2050. A large portion of this growth looks set to come from Asian countries, in particular China and India. In Shell, we are committed to doing our part by finding environmentally and socially responsible ways to meet the world's future energy needs.
Key to achieving Shell goals is technology, which plays to our strengths. Projects & Technology is the technology engine for Shell developing innovative and competitive technology solutions which when deployed in the businesses deliver top quartile, capital efficient projects and wells.
The Bangalore Story
The technology hub in the east has meant recognition of increasing demands and opportunities for business here. Bangalore fits in perfectly with this east vision thanks to its proximity to key talent pipeline. It is a city of choice for other global technology companies as well like GE, Merck and Phillips.
Set up as Shell Technology India in 2006, it was the first of its kind in the country. The story between 2006 and 2012 has been one of phenomenal growth and technical competence building. The brightest and best talent in India has been brought in to ensure we develop the technical horsepower to deliver on Shell’s vision. Over 105 Grads and 682 experienced staff make up STCB’s world class technical delivery capability.
STCB has become home to a wide spectrum of technical disciplines. It develops niche areas of technical work in fields likecoal bed methane, bitumen R&D and technical services, subsurface modeling, polyol technical services, distillation and light ends research, enhanced computational research, water technology, a project design office etc.
Bangalore is also doing a lot of niche work on some world class projects like Majnoon, Iraq South Gas, Upstream gas and LNG development projects in Australia and cutting-edge FLNG applications among others. Part of its program provides cutting-edge downstream research and development, as well as working with the latest upstream technologies and processes. Currently located in a leased facility at Bangalore, the company will move into a custom-built, 40 acre campus which will house a state of the art technology centre by 2015.
Balancing Supply and Demand for Talent
A large number of engineers and scientists graduate annually from top class Indian universities that are ranked amongst the best in the world. STCB looks for the best to become part of its truly global organization - offering opportunities to work both within India as well as in other Shell locations around the world. The Indian recruitment program complements our hiring efforts in other parts of the world to enable us to continue to service customers globally.
Accessing Indian Talent
In STCB we believe in equipping our recruits with skills and competences critical for successful performance on the job. Indian graduates are enrolled into the global Graduate Foundation Program which addresses development needs of different skill pools in a holistic and tailored fashion.
As part of this program, all new employees have the opportunity to interact with Shell experts, learn about Shell culture and ways of working, hone their technical skills and choose their specialist areas in line with their interests and the needs of the business. The recruits then become part of a fast-paced and challenging environment with excellent growth opportunities.
