Shell makes a major contribution to the UK, not just through providing products and services which our customers need, but also through employment, tax revenues and investment which boost the economy. We employ around 8,500 people directly in the UK and indirectly around 80,000 jobs are dependent on our activities. Shell is a key provider of the energy that millions of people use for heating and powering the UK. We are operator for about 25% of the UK’s oil and gas supplies and produce about 16% of the nation’s petrol and diesel. We are probably best known to the public for our service stations and we have around 850 retail sites in the UK. Our Stanlow refinery near Ellesmere Port in Cheshire is at the heart of Britain’s oil and chemical production industry producing a range of transport fuels, including V-Power, and chemicals for industry. Our two main businesses are Shell U.K. Exploration and Production, an operating division of Shell U.K. Limited, and Shell U.K. Oil Products Limited. Each has its own board of directors and is a subsidiary of Shell Holdings (U.K.) Limited. Shell Centre, on the south bank of the Thames in London, is the global headquarters for Shell's Downstream business (Oil Products and Chemicals) and supporting functions. There are other global Shell businesses who have a presence in Shell Centre too including Aviation, Marine Products and Shell WindEnergy Ltd. The UK is also base for Shell International Trading and Shipping Company (STASCO) based in London, and Shell Global Solutions UK based in Chester.
