Find out about becoming a Deck (Navigational) Officer

The Deck Officer has a strong operational aspect to his / her role. Finding yourself standing on the Bridge and navigating your way through busy and narrow shipping lanes, or having to complete cargo operations within tight deadlines can be very daunting. You will need to be confident, self motivating and be able to use your own initiative in challenging situations where you will have overall responsibility.

Responsibilities

    • Preparing and implementing fully comprehensive passage plans between any two ports in the world using hi-tech and sophisticated equipment to navigate the ship with complete confidence and accuracy.
    • Inspect, test and maintain important safety equipment including Life-Saving Appliances (lifeboats, lifejackets etc.) and Fire-Fighting Equipment (Extinguishers, Breathing Apparatus etc.)
    • Use of advanced instrumentation and technology to complete the discharge of cargo as quickly and efficiently as possible whilst ensuring the safety of the environment and of those around you.

The Deck Cadet Training Course

Cadets on a Fire Training Course

A Navigational Officer will start their career as a Deck cadet. Life as a Cadet involves alternating periods in college and at sea gaining theoretical and valuable hands-on training and experience. During the time at college, a cadet will undertake courses including Chartwork, Meteorology, Ship Stability and Law.

Once your training has finished and you have successfully passed the examinations, promotion to 3rd Officer usually follows, bringing with it a salary in excess of £26,000!

 

Then, depending on your performance and ability, you may progress through the ranks to Captain at which point you will be commanding your own ship!
