Shell’s partnership with Science Centre Singapore (SCS)

printable version

Promoting education in Science and Technology

The Shell – Science Centre Singapore (SCS) partnership began with the inception of SCS in 1977, and reflects Shell’s enduring concern in developing knowledge and education for future generations. Throughout the years, Shell has continuously supported SCS through various exhibits and the annual Shell Singapore Youth Science Festival (SYSF).

Shell sponsored exhibits in SCS

The earliest Shell sponsored exhibit in SCS is the Energy Exhibition. First launched in 1977, an energy exhibition called “The Energy World” was set up in acknowledgement of Shell’s contribution to the SCS. In 1986, “The Energy World” was renamed “Dynamic Domain” and reflected the various scientific and technological advances since 1977. At the end of 1998, the Energy Exhibition was re-furbished and occupies some 700 sq m and features more than 70 exhibits spread over 8 areas today.

In 2003, the Chemistry Exhibition made its first appearance with the aims of exploring the fundamentals and other aspects of Chemistry through exhibits, models, graphics and a range of other interactive and innovative presentation techniques. It helps to further stimulate general interest in science and covers six main areas – i.e. fundamental chemistry, it’s a material world, phenomenal chemistry, reactive chemistry, chemistry in everyday life and chemical bar.

2008: Climate Change Exhibition

Climate change is a real threat that the world is facing today and we at Shell have begun taking a lead in tackling this issue through this significant partnership to encourage sustainable development for future generations. In 1997, Shell was one of the first energy companies to acknowledge the threat of climate change; to call for action by governments, our industry and energy users; and to take action ourselves.

On 17 May 2008 we celebrated Shell’s sponsorship of a five-year Climate Change exhibition at the Science Centre Singapore (SCS).  This effort was a partnership between SCS, Shell Companies in Singapore and National Environment Agency.

The Climate Change exhibition will see interactive displays educating the public sector on the various environmental issues that Singapore and the world face today. Highlights such as the mechanical Wayang Kulit show and Object Theatre Show called “The Climate Change Show” hopes to enlighten and entertain visitors.

The Climate Change Show is a 20-minute, multi-sensory experience that drives home the serious issues of climate change in a humorous and exciting way, through visual and physical special effects. Narrated by Sheepie, a talking, animated sheep wearing rubber boots, this show will educate visitors on how and why our Earth is changing.

Shell Singapore Youth Science Festival (SYSF)

Organised by Shell, Science Centre Singapore, and the Science Teachers’ Association of Singapore (STAS), the Shell Singapore Youth Science Festival (Shell SYSF) underlines Shell’s belief in the importance of developing the love of science for the sustainability of future generations. The Shell SYSF has grown to become a key annual event in the school calendar.

Activities include the Shell Science Fair, SYSF Science Explorama, SYSF Stage!, the Teachers’, Students’ and the Public Seminars. These activities provide an avenue to showcase the creativity and innovation of the students and encourage students of very diverse backgrounds to come together with science as the common platform.
