Shell* Companies in Singapore

printable version

Shell was established in Singapore more than a century ago in 1891. Since then, Shell, which employs about 2000 staff, has become one of Singapore's largest foreign investors. Assets held by Shell Companies in Singapore** in petroleum, petrochemicals and other activities amount to US$6.3 billion.

Shell set up Singapore’s first oil refinery in 1961, for which the company was awarded "Pioneer Certificate No. 1" by the Singapore government. Today, it is the largest Shell refinery in the world, in terms of crude distillation capacity.

Shell has since grown together with and helped shape Singapore’s petrochemicals industry, and on its centenary in 1991, received Singapore's first "Distinguished Partner in Progress" award in recognition of its contributions to Singapore.

In September 2000, Shell was awarded the prestigious one-time Millennium Trade Award in recognition of the company’s significant contribution to the nation’s international trade development over the years.

In July 2006, Shell announced its plans to proceed with the construction of a new world-scale ethylene cracker on Bukom Island and a new world-scale Mono-Ethylene Glycol (MEG) plant on Jurong Island. This multi-billion dollar investment is the single largest investment by the Group in Singapore, and reinforces Shell’s continuing commitment to and confidence in Singapore.

Businesses in Singapore

Singapore has become an important hub for the Shell Group’s businesses which include:

  • Shell's 500,000 barrels-per-day Bukom refinery is today the largest Shell refinery in the world in terms of crude distillation capacity, making Singapore a key regional supply and trading centre for the Shell Group in the East. Some 90 percent of Bukom's products are exported to countries in the region and beyond.
  • Since 1998, Shell has been the only retail network to offer four superior grades of petrol products as well as diesel. Its alliance with 7-Eleven has all Shell-owned retail stations being operated by 7-Eleven, giving customers greater convenience with a wider range of products and services.
  • Shell’s largest petrochemical production and export centre in the Asia Pacific region. Shell’s investments in the Singapore petrochemicals industry include a polyols plant, a joint-venture styrene monomer and propylene oxide plant, and other joint ventures.
  • Singapore is the fuel hub for the Marine business in the East, supplying bunker and lubricants in the Asia Pacific region. It is the 2nd largest delivery centre in the Shell world for marine fuels, and the largest for marine lubricants.

  • Shell International Eastern Trading Company (SIETCO) handles the trading of exports manufactured by the Bukom refinery and other oil products. SIETCO is a vital link in Shell's global trading network and a major market player across the whole of Asia Pacific.
  • Shell Gas & Power's regional office for its Asia Pacific businesses, which includes the development and operation of LNG terminals, Natural Gas pipelines and power projects in a number of countries in the region. The Singapore office oversees a diverse range of projects in the region, such as the Gas to Liquids plant in Bintulu, which is producing ultra-clean, emissions free liquids.
  • Shell Exploration & Production’s Asia Pacific organisation which focuses on seven countries and ranges from significant oil and gas production and exploration activities in Malaysia and Brunei, through to new business development opportunities in China.
  • Other Shell companies incorporated in Singapore include Shell Treasury Centre East (Pte) Ltd and Shell International Shipping Services (Pte) Ltd.
