Shell New Zealand and Sponsorship

printable version

Shell New Zealand plays an active role in the New Zealand community. We get hundreds of sponsorship requests every year, and regrettably, we are unable to fund all of them. To assist those looking for sponsorship the following outlines the areas Shell focuses on, and where our sponsorships money currently goes.

Shell has chosen to focus on three main sponsorship areas in New Zealand:

  • The Environment
  • Business and Sustainability issues
  • Future Generations of New Zealanders

Currently, Shell is meeting our commitment to focus on these three areas in a number of ways:

Environment: Shell is also a core funder of the Massey University Wildlife Hospital, which operates both as an on-call mobile Oil Spill Recovery Centre, and also as a hospital for injured wildlife, including many native New Zealand birds.

Future Generations: partnership with Barnardos, New Zealand’s largest children and youth focused charity. In addition to providing money for Barnardos annual one week fund raising campaign, Shell also supports the Shell Barnardos Fund, which aims to provide access to small amounts of money as a “fund of last resort” to people who Barnardos identify, and who can not get financial assistance anywhere else.

Business and Sustainability Issues: Shell is an active member of both the New Zealand Business Council for Sustainable Development and is also part of the core group of companies that fund and support the annual Survey of Corporate Environmental Responsiveness, which is produced annually by Massey University. We are also an active member of the Business and Parliamentary Trust, which works to foster an understanding by both politicians and businesses of each others perspectives.

Regional Sponsorship: As well as these initiatives, Shell is also a supporter of some activities in the Taranaki region, in recognition of our presence in Taranaki over half a century, as an oil and gas explorer and producer.

Activities in Taranaki which Shell supports currently, include

  • Puke Ariki Museum and Library complex
  • WOMAD
  • Young Enterprise Scheme
  • Omata Tank Wetlands Conservation
  • Herekawe Stream project.

As well, Shell supports a range of initiatives through our joint venture, New Plymouth company, Shell Todd Oil Services. More information on what STOS supports in Taranaki can be found on their website  www.stos.co.nz

Shell has also signed on again as a sponsor of the Auckland Festival - AK05, in recognition of Auckland’s importance as a market for Shell.

Product Specific Sponsorship

Shell no longer supports individual motor racing teams in New Zealand. As Shell is a global sponsor of the Ferrari Formula One team, Shell in New Zealand contributes to the Shell F1 sponsorship. This, along with Shell's sponsorship of the Shell Helix Motorsport programme on TV One, make up the bulk of Shell’s product specific sponsorship.

Petrol Vouchers

Shell gets a number of requests for the provision of petrol vouchers as prizes, for raffles, or to assist community organisations and sports teams with travel costs. Shell no longer produces our own petrol vouchers and so is unable to help in this way.

Prizes for Raffles

Shell does have a limited range of prizes for early childhood centre and school raffles. Applications need to be made in writing to the address below.

Baring in mind that most of Shell’s sponsorship money is already allocated as outlined above, if you would still like to make a sponsorship proposal to Shell New Zealand, or to request raffle prizes, please write to:
