Shell is involved in the communities in which we operate, through our presence as a well-established brand and employer and through the causes and events we support. We choose support that makes a broad contribution to community life. Shell companies aim to be good neighbours by continuously improving the ways in which we contribute directly or indirectly to the general well-being

In 2005, Shell continued to work with New Zealand’s largest children’s charity, Barnardos, to meet the charity’s goal of ensuring all children get the best possible start in life.

Other partnerships in 2005 included: - Sponsorship of the World of Music Arts and Dance (WOMAD) festival in New Plymouth, featuring about 400 performers from 18 different countries, with an audience of about 14,000 people, spending an estimated NZ$2.4 million in the local economy.
- Sponsorship of the Taranaki Regional Young Enterprise Scheme (YES), in which teams from 17 schools participated. The winners of the regional competition, ardeze from Spotswood College in New Plymouth, placed third overall in the YES nationals.
- Continued support as a Founding Partner of Puke Ariki, New Plymouth’s award-winning library and museum development. In 2005, Shell sponsored the “Speed in Motion” exhibit and the museum’s oil and gas exhibit was refreshed to reflect changes in the industry.
- STOS sponsors other programmes in Taranaki, including the Life Education Trust, and works closely with the Waitara Initiative Supporting Employment to give people in the Waitara community more skills.
- Shell also provided sponsorship of the Auckland festival, AK05.
- Shell made an initial $10,000 donation to overseas Tsunami relief and also matched $27,000 raised by staff donations.
- Shell continued its support of the Qantas Media Awards, as principal sponsor of the Environmental and Conservation Award.
- The company also continued support of Massey University’s Veterinary Animal and Biomedical Sciences unit.
Our support of these activities reflects Shell’s dedication to recognising wider community needs and values, and acknowledges our position in society as a business with an important role to play in sustainable development.
