Basil Omiyi

Country Chair, Shell Companies in Nigeria.

Basil Efoise Omiyi is the Country Chair of the Shell Companies in Nigeira, the first Nigerian to hold the post. Basil joined the then Shell-BP in 1970.

 

 

Basil Efoise Omiyi is Country Chair of Shell Companies in Nigeria. Before his appointment on a full time basis to this position in January 2008, he was Managing Director of Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited (SPDC) and Country Chair of Shell Companies in Nigeria, a position he held from September 2004 to December 2007. His appointment to that position, the first for any Nigerian amongst the multinational oil and gas companies in Nigeria, put Basil at the helm of the biggest private enterprise in Africa.

 

Before he became country chair, Basil had distinguished himself as SPDC's Production Director from 2002 to 2004, and as the company's External Affairs Director from 1999 to 2002. He was also General Manager Relations and Environment from 1996 to 1999 and Operations Manager from 1993 to 1996. He was appointed into the Board of The Shell Petroleum Development Company Ltd in 1999.

 

Basil had held several Petroleum Engineering positions both in Shell Nigeria and overseas within the Royal Dutch Shell Group. In 1987, Basil was at the Shell International Petroleum Company (SIPM) offices in The Hague, where he served first in a technical role as Head Integrated Subsurface Team, delivering Field development and Reservoir studies services to several Shell companies around the world. In 1989 he was appointed to a business role as Area Business Liaison Manager for Africa and the Middle East.

 

Earlier in his career, Basil had also worked in Shell UK Exploration and Production Company, London between 1981 and 1982 as head of Field Development (fern/Eider) and Southern Gas Coordinator. He returned to Nigeria in 1983 to take up the position of Chief Petroleum Engineer for SPDC East, and subsequently overall Head of Field Development and Operations.

 

A graduate of Chemistry from the University of Ibadan, from which he also obtained a Post Graduate Diploma in Petroleum Technology, Basil joined Shell-BP in 1970 as a Trainee Well site Petroleum Engineer.

 

Basil belongs to several professional and trade associations, including the Nigeria-Netherlands Chamber of Commerce, of which he is currently the President. He is also Chairman of the upstream oil and gas industry group, Oil Producers Trade Section (OPTS) of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, a Board member of the National Stakeholder Working Group of NEITI, and Chairman of the Energy Section of NEPAD Business Group Nigeria. He is also Chairman of the Oil & Gas Commission of the Nigerian Economic Summit Group.

 

He has received several local and international awards, including the Honorary Fellowship of the Energy Institute, and the 2009 Offshore West Africa (OWA) Distinguished Achievement Award.

 

Basil is married and has five children.
