Shell’s partnership with Kuwait dates back to the late 1940s when Shell brought Kuwait’s crude oil to market. From those early days Shell’s business with Kuwait has developed to include oil trading, lubricants, technical services and chemicals sales. Shell has also been involved in joint studies on Kuwait’s upstream sector since the mid-1990s. This has assisted KOC [Kuwait Oil Company] in developing its staff and provided the opportunity to study the latest developments in technology application.

For me it is a privilege to be here and extend my knowledge of Kuwait. Shell has been pleased to help with some of the challenges facing Kuwait’s oil sector and we look forward to doing more in the future as Kuwait opens up to greater investment by international companies. Shell staff involved with Kuwait are either located in the Kuwait Shell Limited representative office or on the ground in the country’s refineries and with Shell Lubricants’ distributors. Shell experts and businesses based in London, Houston, Dubai, Singapore and The Netherlands are also working to support Kuwait’s oil industry. Through these businesses and their networks, our locally based staff have access to Shell’s global expertise and the experience of Shell’s 119,000 staff worldwide. On average, 90 per cent of Shell staff worldwide are nationals of the countries of operation, and can draw on this shared expertise.

In Kuwait’s refineries much has already been achieved by Shell Global Solutions in partnership with KNPC [Kuwait National Petroleum Company]. Shell hopes it can provide the same open door to our technology in Kuwait’s upstream sector.
Wherever in the world Shell operates, Shell staff are a part of local society and the company supports a range of social initiatives which are complementary to business. In recent years in Kuwait, Shell has been a co-sponsor of an ongoing high school environmental awareness campaign on wildlife preservation, working with Kuwait’s Environment Public Authority. Shell in Kuwait has sent local oil sector staff to Shell companies abroad on training programmes. Shell has also supported a range of cultural activities in Kuwait, including an important archaeological project with London University and the Kuwait Museum. With regards to business activities in the future Shell is competing for a role in the operation and development of Kuwait’s Northern Fields in a consortium led by ExxonMobil and including ConocoPhillips and Maersk - a cornerstone of which will be Shell’s expertise in oil and gas exploration and production throughout the region, demonstrated, for example, in Syria, Oman, Abu Dhabi and Iran. Shell aspires to bring to Kuwait more of its proven and extensive capability for people development and technology application. “These are challenging times in the world but Shell has seen its way through due to the loyalty of its staff, adherence to a set of deeply held principles and a concentration on the specific needs of its customers.” Ahmed Mouti, Country Chairman Shell Companies in Kuwait
