The Shell approach

The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that energy use could grow by more than half over the next quarter century, and possibly double by 2050. A large portion of this growth looks set to come from Asian countries, in particular China and India - as they continue to industrialise and experience rapid economic growth.

In Shell, we are committed to doing our part by finding environmentally and socially responsible ways to meet the world's future energy needs. Shell is one of the largest independent oil and natural gas enterprises, operating in more than 140 countries.

Ranked among the world's major chemicals companies, Shell produced more than 3% of global gas and nearly 3% of the world's oil in 2005. Besides, we have an interest in almost 50 refineries, and a network of some 45,000 service stations. Shell has the broadest portfolio of hydrogen, bio-fuels, wind and solar power activities of any major energy company.

One way Shell addresses the energy challenge is through its strategy to Grow East-- to uncover the expanding markets in the region. To help fulfill new opportunities, Shell has created a company called Shell Technology India.  As part of the Shell Group's technical community, the new technology centre delivers high-end technical studies, projects and technical services for Shell across the globe, as well as supporting Shell activities in India. The centre offers services that span upstream exploration and production activities as well as downstream gas, refinery and chemical operations and research projects.

Chief Executive
Jeroen van der Veer

"Our experience illustrates three things about developing energy technologies. It takes long term commitment. Being integrated matters. And it opens further opportunities.

A wider challenge is the industry's shortage of qualified and experienced people. In North America and Europe, fewer young people pursue scientific and technical education. In the US, for example, the number of university students studying petroleum engineering has fallen by more than 80% since the early 1990s."

State-of-the-art technical facilities

Shell Technology India
