In October 1997, the "Shell" Transport and Trading Company, plc celebrated its centenary. In order to mark this in a lasting and meaningful way, the Royal Dutch/ Shell Group of Companies established "the Shell Centenary Scholarship Fund" as a charity which funds Shell Centenary Scholarships. These scholarships support educational advancement and co-operation worldwide by providing opportunities for graduate students from overseas to study in the United Kingdom.

 The Fund's aim is to provide, each year, at least 65 full cost scholarships to international students on one year taught postgraduate courses at seven of the UK's leading universities: Cambridge, Durham, Edinburgh, Imperial College London, Oxford and University College London. Each full-cost scholarship will cover tuition, accommodation, maintenance costs and return airfare for the scholarship holder only. The scholarship application opens annually from October to March.
