As part of our commitment to promoting innovation and enthusiasm
amongst Gibraltar's youth, every December Shell sponsor the
'Shell Energy Rally' at Gibraltar's Bayside Comprehensive
School. The energy rally involves the design, development and construction of
a range of self-powered vehicles that compete in a staged sprint-race.
There is also an electrically powered vehicle category for those who wish
to make the most of a small electrical engine. Prior to the race-day,
a panel of judges (including Shell representatives as well as school
teachers) grade the vehicles against a series of features, including: - Originality of design
- Effectiveness of the design
- Functionality
- Overall impression
The scoring for each of these facets is then added to the actual race day
results and times, out of which a winner for each category is identified. The overall winner of the competition receives the 'coveted' Shell Trophy. Winners of the Shell Energy Rally 2005
