Road Safety Fun Fair

China has one of the worst safety records in the world. Shell China holds a road safety programme annually as part of its commitment to reduce accidents in China and make the roads safer for drivers and pedestrians. Last year, road safety fun fairs were held in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou.

Organised in partnership with local government and media organisations, the events attracted hundreds of thousand people. Many drivers brought their families with them to compete for family awards. In all cities, the best 50 drivers negotiated a driving obstacle course to challenge for the top prizes. There were many other games open to people with the aim to raise the awareness of road safety, improve road skills, especially defensive driving techniques, and learn more about traffic regulations.

Shell has also sponsored road maps that included road safety information for drivers.

China Road Map

Shell has updated its road map book of China, in tandem with the China Map Publishing House. The map book, first published in 1997, was completed early in 2001, and is now also available on CD. The first edition of the book, published with the People's Transportation Publishing House, was recognised as the best selling Scientific and Technical Book in 1998. Its successor published the following year, won the same award for 2000.

Support for road safety education in China has received a welcome boost from Shell. Shell has sponsored the production of a 120-minute-long three part educational video - "People, Traffic and Regulations" - and has donated several thousand copies to schools in 18 cities throughout China.

The video focuses on traffic regulations for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers and incorporates facts and examples of road safety regulations.
