 Shell has sponsored the Chinese, Uighur and Kazakh language version of a series of children's booklets raising awareness about the endangered Wild Bactrian Camel and desert habitats.
The booklets, also supported by the Jane Goodall Institute - "Roots and Shoots" programme, have been published by Xinjiang Institute of Environmental Protection and Wild Camel Protection Foundation, a UK-based foundation which has helped established a 150,000 square kilometer nature reserve for these endangered camels in Xinjiang. Shell sponsored an expedition in 1997 to search for the camels, which are distinct species from domestic camels and rarer than the Giant Panda. Shell also sponsored a video of the camels to raise awareness in schools.
