Low Temperature Mixing

printable version

Asphalt is typically laid at temperatures in excess of 150˚C.  This can be uncomfortable for operators, particularly in hot climates and has a cost in terms of plant and machinery required to mix and lay asphalt, and the CO2 generated by those processes.

In order to reduce these problems and costs, we have developed a range of technologies which enable asphalt to be laid at lower temperatures:

Lower mixing and application temperatures mean reduced emissions, dust and fumes

Shell Bitumen’s WAM Foam production process reduces production and laying temperatures by about 50°C with a dramatic reduction of emissions, dust and fumes.

Due to a special additive, the use of ‘S’ Grade binders in penetration grade and polymer modified bitumen enables lower mixing and application temperatures – around 135°C  rather than the usual 180°C.
