Bridge Design

printable version

Bridge design and construction places significant requirements on pavement design – not least the ability to flex under the dynamic load of vehicles and weather conditions without cracking or deforming.

Heavy loads and weathering involved in bridge design requires a durable, flexible pavements solution

In bridges over seawater or those salted to treat frost or snow, the asphalt mixture must also be resistant to the affects of salt and moisture. Mastic asphalt in combination with polymer-modified bitumen is an excellent material to meet these criteria for the following reasons:

  • Mastic asphalt is free of voids so there is no penetration by water. It can therefore be used not only for the surface course but also for the waterproofing.

  • Polymer modified bitumen maximises the stability of the mastic asphalt and flexibility at low temperatures, reducing the likelihood of cracking.

Stone mastic asphalt (SMA) is also suitable for bridge decking.
