Sustainable benefits are often grouped within three main areas of impact: social, environmental and economic. Big global reductions in greenhouse gas emissions will be required by society. In early 2007, the scientists of the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (UNIPCC) re-confirmed the scientific consensus – now with more than 90% certainty that man-made climate change is underway. Shell was one of the first energy companies to acknowledge the threat of climate change; to call for action by governments, industry and energy users; and to take action ourselves. Using our technical know-how, we can help reduce CO2 in road construction and we continue to ensure we take actions to improve.

Improved road infrastructure provides rural communities with enhanced access to social services such as hospitals, clinic and schools. Roads help with the development of local economies by providing farmers access to local markets.  Roads are a corner stone of poverty reduction strategy. At Shell Bitumen, we have experience of implementing low cost roads in developing countries. We are committed to rolling this experience out more countries in 2008.

As well as supporting today’s environmental and social agenda, we are also significantly increasing our Research and Development effort to develop the technologies for tomorrow’s sustainable solutions.
